{"id":26664,"date":"2019-03-28T08:00:23","date_gmt":"2019-03-28T12:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=26664"},"modified":"2019-03-27T22:19:41","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T02:19:41","slug":"anglers-can-provide-scientific-data-from-smartphone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/03\/28\/anglers-can-provide-scientific-data-from-smartphone\/","title":{"rendered":"Anglers Can Provide Scientific Data from Smartphone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Volunteer Surveys Engage Citizen Scientists<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7815\/47305688802_cf8c3c5cde.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of golden trout\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/>As spring fishing season begins in earnest, the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> asks anglers to help track scientific data by using the mobile-friendly <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/survey\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Volunteer Angler Survey<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anglers of all ages can become citizen scientists by recording some basic information from their catch such as species, location and size directly to survey on their smartphone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe data received from our anglers in these surveys is a tremendous asset to the department,\u201d said Fishing and Boating Services Director David Blazer. \u201cOur biologists use this information \u00a0to develop, plan and implement management strategies.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Volunteer surveys have been an important part of fisheries management in Maryland for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since launching several new mobile-friendly volunteer angler surveys within the past year, the department has seen survey participation grow in some instances by more than 80 percent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Currently the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/reefs\/MARI_Survey.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">artificial reef initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdFumd6L_s9UHdnUYRJhIljQEEUnpURYGKEeX5SjEOlocC3Vg\/viewform\">blue crab<\/a>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSecGXN1H62i_KpeacapNf9l1nU9YfEvMKvPsgpub5U4qcDbhQ\/viewform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">freshwater fisheries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSfL0R1KwSAHbVuB7JKvOAb9OsVX3i6B_qQmTYUWrdWET0wY3g\/viewform\">muskie<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSeVqG46PUBBAdcJydeWu-bh333oCqbjzEq8mVXpn7yGb8dSwg\/viewform\">shad<\/a> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/striped-bass\/SB_survey.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">striped bass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">programs have upgraded to mobile-friendly methods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Participants in the Volunteer Angler Survey are eligible to win quarterly prizes.
