{"id":26575,"date":"2019-03-20T10:17:49","date_gmt":"2019-03-20T14:17:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=26575"},"modified":"2019-03-21T15:55:40","modified_gmt":"2019-03-21T19:55:40","slug":"2019-keep-maryland-beautiful-grants-total-215505","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/03\/20\/2019-keep-maryland-beautiful-grants-total-215505\/","title":{"rendered":"2019 Keep Maryland Beautiful Grants Total $215,505"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grants Supports Communities, Projects and Schools<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26580\" style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/University-of-Maryland-Baltimore-County3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26580\" class=\" wp-image-26580\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/University-of-Maryland-Baltimore-County3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of students at University of Maryland Baltimore County\" width=\"351\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/University-of-Maryland-Baltimore-County3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/University-of-Maryland-Baltimore-County3-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/University-of-Maryland-Baltimore-County3.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-26580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">University of Maryland Baltimore County was a recipient of a 2019 Keep Maryland Beautiful Grant.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Environmental Trust (MET), a unit of the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Department of Resources<\/a>, has awarded 71 grants totaling $215,505 toward environmental education, community cleanup and beautification projects through the <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/met\/Pages\/grant_programs.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keep Maryland Beautiful<\/a> program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These annual grants are funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/met\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Environmental Trust<\/a>, the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DCHD) and the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT).<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe Keep Maryland Beautiful grants program is an ideal tool to support local solutions for improving our communities and environment across the state,\u201d Maryland Natural Resources Secretary Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio said. \u201cThis long-standing partnership reflects the pride and sense of stewardship we all share for Maryland\u2019s outdoors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThrough a cooperative multi-agency partnership led by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, the <a href=\"https:\/\/dhcd.maryland.gov\/Pages\/KMB\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keep Maryland Beautiful program<\/a> focuses on neighborhood beautification through increasing greening, citizen stewardship, community education, and litter removal,\u201d explained DHCD Secretary Kenneth C. Holt. \u201cI\u2019m gratified on behalf of the Hogan administration that DHCD is able to support Keep Maryland Beautiful through substantial investment in the grants program, a partnership with Maryland Environmental Trust and MDOT that is one of the most visible ways we are able to accomplish the overall Keep Maryland Beautiful mission.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThese grants are a great way for MDOT to partner to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay watershed while meeting Marylanders&#8217; day-to-day transportation needs,\u201d said MDOT Secretary Pete K. Rahn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recipients included schools, nonprofit groups, municipalities and land trusts in 15 counties and two major urban municipalities, Baltimore City and Washington, D.C. Many of these grants focus on developing and supporting communities, families, youth and students who take personal responsibility for the health of their communities, protecting nature in their backyards and seeking ways to help reduce or resolve environmental challenges.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cA core part of our mission at Maryland Environmental Trust is to support nonprofits and community organizations that promote stewardship of our open spaces, environmental education and neighborhood greening activities,\u201d MET Director Bill Leahy said. \u201cWe continue to seek paths of expanding our Keep Maryland Beautiful grants program to increase its impact across the state.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Awards given this year were:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/met\/Pages\/GrantLandTrust.aspx#aileen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aileen Hughes<\/a> award totaling $5,000, awarded to an individual representing a Maryland land trust for outstanding leadership, partnership and innovation in a conservation project. The grant is awarded to the Maryland land trust in recognition of the individual\u2019s efforts and good work. The grant is given annually to honor the late Aileen Hughes, a true leader in the conservation movement.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Five <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/met\/Pages\/Grant-EE-CI-CU.aspx#bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill James Environmental Grant<\/a> awards totaling $4,250, given in honor of Senator Bill James who drafted legislation creating the Maryland Environmental Trust and incorporated the activities of the Governor\u2019s Committee to Keep Maryland Beautiful. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">48 <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/met\/Pages\/Grant-EE-CI-CU.aspx#clean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clean Up &amp; Green Up Maryland<\/a> awards totaling $158,005. This grant was established in 2017 to help community groups and nonprofit organizations statewide with neighborhood beautification activities that include litter removal, greening activities, community education, and citizen stewardship statewide.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">10 <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/met\/Pages\/GrantLandTrust.aspx#janice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Janice Hollmann Grant<\/a> awards totaling $40,000, given to Maryland land trusts to increase capacity, support community programing and innovation and foster stronger, better connected land trusts. All grants require a 100 percent \u00a0match from the land trust of in-kind services and privately raised funds. The grant is given in memory of Janice Hollmann, who exemplified citizen leadership of local land trusts in Maryland. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seven <a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/met\/Pages\/Grant-EE-CI-CU.aspx#jones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Margaret Rosch Jones<\/a> awards totaling $8,250. The Margaret Rosch Jones Award is given in honor of the first executive director of the Keep Maryland Beautiful Program. These grants are awarded to an ongoing project or activity that has demonstrated success in solving an environmental issue, whether local or statewide.
