The contest is judged annually by a panel of forestry experts and special guest judge, Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lydia Secrist of Accident, Garrett County was awarded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marylanddnr\/32296678577\/in\/album-72157707226463434\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">First Place<\/a>, and her school will receive 15 trees for planting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marylanddnr\/46324245285\/in\/album-72157707226463434\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Second Place<\/a>, with a prize of 10 trees, was awarded to three students from Mechanicsville, St. Mary&#8217;s County &#8212; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jakiara Baker, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Erica Daymude and Autumn Edwards<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/marylanddnr\/32296678357\/in\/album-72157707226463434\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Third Place<\/a> honors went to Hailey Ciccarelli and Molly Richards of Eldersburg, Carroll County. Their school will receive five trees.<\/span><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;I am thrilled to take part in this annual tradition, which gives a spotlight to both the artistic talent and passion for the environment shared by our young people,&#8221; said First Lady Yumi Hogan, who is an accomplished artist and adjunct professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The posters were created using varied artistic techniques, including colored pencils, crayons, markers and paint, all illustrating this year\u2019s contest theme, \u201cTrees are Terrific\u2026 and Forests are Too!&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Maryland Forest Service accepted hundreds of entries for the 2019 Arbor Day Poster Contest. Previously selected winners from each participating county were then forwarded for judging by staff and the volunteer Maryland Urban and Community Forest Committee.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Arbor Day poster contest is hosted by the department\u2019s Tree-Mendous Maryland Program.
