{"id":26249,"date":"2019-02-05T14:06:01","date_gmt":"2019-02-05T19:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=26249"},"modified":"2019-02-05T14:06:01","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T19:06:01","slug":"free-tree-seedlings-available-for-frederick-county-landowners-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/02\/05\/free-tree-seedlings-available-for-frederick-county-landowners-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Free Tree Seedlings Available for Frederick County Landowners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Backyard Buffers Help Improve Water Quality<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4816\/44567415960_0b351fd630.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of riparian buffer at stream\" width=\"349\" height=\"234\" \/>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>\u00a0is offering free tree seedlings to landowners who have a creek, drainage ditch, stream or other waterway on or near their property through the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/programs\/Backyard-Buffer-Program.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Backyard Buffers<\/a>\u00a0program.<\/p>\n<p>Trees and shrubs planted along waterways help improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients, lowering peak water temperatures,\u00a0reducing sediment and stabilizing stream banks.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Each \u201cbuffer in a bag\u201d contains about 30 native bare-root tree and shrub seedlings suitable for planting in moist soil conditions. This year\u2019s bundle will include a mix of black chokeberry, buttonbush, eastern redbud, pitch\/loblolly hybrid, swamp white oak and Washington Hawhthorne.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Forest Service<\/a>\u00a0staff will provide information on tree maintenance and planting techniques, in addition to suggestions on other good native species at the time of pickup.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Requests must be received by March 31. Interested property owners should contact\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/03\/23\/free-tree-seedlings-available-for-frederick-county-landowners\/sean.weaver@maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sean Weaver<\/a>\u00a0at 301-791-4010 to reserve their seedlings.
