{"id":26027,"date":"2019-01-10T08:00:01","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T13:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=26027"},"modified":"2019-01-09T13:08:17","modified_gmt":"2019-01-09T18:08:17","slug":"winter-turkey-season-opens-jan-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2019\/01\/10\/winter-turkey-season-opens-jan-17\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter Turkey Season Opens Jan. 17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Second Chance for Hunters to Take a Hen or Gobbler<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/6\/5615\/15774690565_58b5d38995.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of two wild turkeys\" width=\"351\" height=\"280\" \/>The\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a><\/u>\u00a0offers hunters who did not bag a turkey in the fall another chance, as the winter turkey season runs statewide Jan. 17-19.<\/p>\n<p>The department established the winter season in 2015 to increase opportunities while minimizing conflicts with other hunting seasons.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWild turkeys are abundant in most of the state,\u201d\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Wildlife\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wildlife and Heritage Service<\/a><\/u> Director Paul Peditto said. \u201cThis season is perfect for hunters that want to get outdoors when other popular hunting seasons are closed or winding down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maryland hunters may only use the following weapons during the winter turkey season:\u00a0Airguns that shoot arrows or bolts; crossbows and vertical bows; or shotguns loaded with No. 4 shot or smaller.<\/p>\n<p>Hunting hours are from one half-hour before sunrise to one half-hour after sunset. The\u00a0bag limit\u00a0is one turkey of either sex, provided the hunter did not harvest a turkey in the 2018 fall season.
