{"id":25595,"date":"2018-12-11T09:00:59","date_gmt":"2018-12-11T14:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=25595"},"modified":"2018-12-11T05:05:12","modified_gmt":"2018-12-11T10:05:12","slug":"step-into-2019-with-a-first-day-hike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/12\/11\/step-into-2019-with-a-first-day-hike\/","title":{"rendered":"Step into 2019 with a First Day Hike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Popular New Year&#8217;s Tradition Returns Across Maryland<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4717\/27843326899_35f178f977.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of hikers at Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center's 2018 First Day Hike\" width=\"350\" height=\"269\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center will host a First Day Hike on New New Year&#8217;s Day.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>\u00a0invites everyone to kick off the New Year with one of Maryland\u2019s fastest-growing traditions \u2013 a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/firstdayhikes.aspx\">First Day Hike<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 1, 2019, the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Maryland Park Service<\/a>\u00a0will offer more than three dozen hikes on more than 30 state lands and parks, as part of a nationwide event sponsored by\u00a0America\u2019s State Parks.<\/p>\n<p>These hikes will provide a wide array of outdoor adventures and experiences for every level of hiker and walker, providing unique access to Maryland\u2019s cultural, historical and natural resources and treasures, along with opportunities for education and stewardship. Many hikes are even pet-friendly.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Numerous parks, state forests and wildlife management areas will also be open Jan. 1 for self-guided treks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2019 will be an exciting year as we continue to create, enhance and maintain public access and recreation opportunities throughout the state,\u201d Maryland Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. \u201cI urge everyone to kick it off with a resolution to join us in Maryland\u2019s great outdoors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, despite frigid temperatures, New Year&#8217;s Day saw 1,227 people hike 2,535 miles in Maryland.
