Park Ranger Meghan Rhode added, &#8220;We have been seeing cormorants migrating in large numbers along the coast. There are still a few tree swallows in the area. Bufflehead and common loons have moved into the bay. The beach is seeing an increase in ruddy turnstones and black-bellied plovers. And now that the osprey have flown south, we are seeing an influx of bald eagles on the beach and the surrounding area. Northern harriers are starting to make their presence known over the marsh.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As for leaf peeping, we will be back in 2019, with what we hope will be a decidedly more colorful series of weekly reports.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Millhouse Candles in Keedysville will host a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.millhousecandles.com\/events.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Holiday Open House<\/a> this weekend with local guest artisans The Moonshine Forge, For the Birds and Gapland Farms. On Saturday, visit with local author Sean Daniels of \u201cHalf A Day Late &#8212; The Battle of Crampton&#8217;s Gap on South Mountain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Middletown and Pleasant Valley areas in Washington and Frederick counties are home to a wealth of professional artisans. Currently there are 16 fine artists and craftspeople celebrating \u201cHandmade\u201d in Gapland this weekend during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.valleycraftnetwork.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Valley Craft Network Studio Tour<\/a>. During the free tour, stop by their studios and showrooms for an up-close look at the creative process.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25303\" style=\"width: 261px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25303\" class=\"wp-image-25303\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/11\/Christkindlmarkt-at-UnionMills.png\" alt=\"Christkindlmarkt at UnionMills\" width=\"251\" height=\"167\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christkindlmarkt at Union Mills<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nothing brings back the yuletide spirit quite like the <a href=\"http:\/\/marylandchristmasshow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Christmas Show<\/a>\u00a0in historic Frederick. Visitors from near and far will discover the joys of shopping at Maryland&#8217;s premier Christmas event now in its 34th year. On Saturday enjoy a German-style <a href=\"http:\/\/unionmills.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christkindlmarkt at Union Mills<\/a> in Carroll County. Frohe Weihnachten!<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by the Baltimore American Indian Center, the <a href=\"https:\/\/baltimoreamericanindiancenter.org\/event\/baic-44th-annual-pow-wow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">44th Annual Powwow<\/a> will include Native American dancing, drumming, music, cultural presentations as well as jewelry, artwork, crafts, clothing and food. Don\u2019t miss the \u201cGrand Entry\u201d at noon and again at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Lutherville-Timonium.<\/p>\n<p>Also nearby, find out what\u2019s left after all the mass migration of summer songbirds and bloom flowers. Birds like the Northern\u00a0Junco and White-throated sparrow have arrived at Oregon Ridge\u00a0Park as well as interesting seed pods and animal signs. Hike the changing habitats during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/526830177747246\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cFalling Behind\u201d<\/a>\u00a0this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Bring your little explorer (ages 0 to 4) for an interactive program all about trees at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/central\/soldiersdelight.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area<\/a>\u00a0Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and <a href=\"https:\/\/go.activecalendar.com\/doit-md\/event\/hug-a-tree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hug a Tree<\/a> together. A guided story book presentation, music and movement songs, a short hike to look at different trees. In this season of Thanksgiving, join a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.otterpointcreek.org\/events\/details\/2076\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gratitude Hike at Anita C. Leight Estuary Center<\/a> in Harford County. Stroll through the woods Saturday morning with a naturalist as your guide, drawing on the calming beauty of nature to allow you to focus on all things for which you are grateful. This free program is geared toward adults.<\/p>\n<p>Join <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/central\/patapsco.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patapsco Valley State Park<\/a> staff Saturday for a leisurely two-mile <a href=\"https:\/\/go.activecalendar.com\/doit-md\/event\/observation-hike-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nature Observation Hike<\/a> along the moderate terrain of the Santee Branch trail. Learn how scientists search for clues and conduct wildlife research. On Saturday afternoon you could also catch up with Ranger Erik in the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/central\/seneca.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seneca Creek State Park<\/a> for a two-mile moderate <a href=\"https:\/\/go.activecalendar.com\/doit-md\/event\/waring-viaduct-hike-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Waring Viaduct Hike<\/a> to the historic railroad bridge. With marching bands, Bolivian\u00a0dancing groups, floats, giant characters and balloons and Santa, this is the only Thanksgiving Parade in the metropolitan area.<\/p>\n<p>This Saturday morning spend the day admiring dozens of stunning handmade Amish quilts and other hand-stitched items at a traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitstmarysmd.com\/events\/amish-quilt-auction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amish Quilt Auction<\/a> in Mechanicsville. On Sunday the very popular <a href=\"http:\/\/hvfd7.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Annual Fall Craft Fair in Hollywood<\/a>\u00a0will take place at the town\u2019s fire department.<\/p>\n<p>Calvert County\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jefpat.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jefferson Patterson Park &amp; Museum<\/a> in St. Leonard hosts a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jefpat.org\/Documents\/2018-HideTanning-Nov17th.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hide Tanning Workshop<\/a>\u00a0Saturday. With a little knowledge and a lot of elbow grease, deer skins can be transformed into supple buckskins. On Saturday the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/apm.activecommunities.com\/ccrp\/Activity_Search\/turkey-trot\/8551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denton Turkey Trot<\/a> kicks off at 8 a.m. with a 2-mile walk, run or jog from Denton Elementary to <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/martinak.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martinak State Park<\/a> and back!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You can also get your holiday shopping started at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/1692188467497260\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvest Thyme Craft<\/a> in Parsonburg, which features crafts from local artisans and crafters. Then head down to Ocean City for the <a href=\"https:\/\/downtownassociation.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Light Up Downtown Winter Festival<\/a> starting at 3 p.m. on the Boardwalk at the Inlet. This is a free event for the entire family as Ocean City gets dolled up for the holidays with live music, tree lighting, kids&#8217; crafts, games and prizes, shopping options and Santa.<\/p>\n<p>Also this weekend the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ococean.com\/holidays-ocean-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Winterfest of Lights<\/a> begins at 125<sup>th<\/sup> Street (bayside). The one-mile journey takes you through 58 acres of lights and features a 50-foot Christmas tree.
