Rutherford chaired the meeting in the governor\u2019s stead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/Pages\/ProgramOpenSpace\/Program-Open-Space-Stateside-Targeting.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Program Open Space<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> acquisition will enhance and protect water quality in Mattawoman Creek and the Potomac River Basin while providing additional recreational options for residents and visitors,\u201d Maryland Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. \u201cThis property is identified by the National Audubon Society as an \u2018Important Bird Area,\u2019 making it an ideal location for birders and other wildlife observers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Myrtle Grove Wildlife Management Area is located in western-central Charles County, near La Plata and Waldorf. Covering over 4,460 acres, it contains mature hardwood forests, early succession habitats, man-made and natural wetlands, and wildlife plantings as well as a 23-acre lake, 10-acre pond, two green-tree reservoirs and numerous streams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The area, managed by the department\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Wildlife\/Pages\/default.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wildlife and Heritage Service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, contains critical habitat for all types of waterfowl and wildlife, including the barred owl, bluebirds, bobwhite quail, mourning dove, white-tailed deer, wild turkey and wood ducks.
