Several large bears were taken throughout the hunt; bears weighing more than 400 pounds were taken in each county.<\/p>\n<p>The largest bear taken weighed 575 pounds, and was harvested in Washington County by Robert Marks of Clear Spring.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are pleased with another successful bear hunt and view it as further evidence the department is\u00a0managing the state\u2019s black bear population effectively,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wildlife and Heritage Service<\/a>\u00a0Director Paul Peditto said. \u201cWith such an expanding and healthy bear population throughout western Maryland, this hunt is an essential management tool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For only the third year, hunters were allowed to harvest bears in all four western counties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018 Maryland Black Bear Hunt by the Numbers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>135 black bears harvested: 31 from Allegany County; 2 from Frederick County; 93 from Garrett County; and 9 from Washington County<\/li>\n<li>163 pounds average weight of bears harvested<\/li>\n<li>64 percent of bears taken on private land<\/li>\n<li>5,491 hunters applied for a permit<\/li>\n<li>800 permits awarded<\/li>\n<li>2,059 hunters participated<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>135 Bears Harvested in Four Counties Favorable weather conditions helped bear hunters enjoy success during Maryland&#8217;s 15th annual black bear hunt.
