{"id":24792,"date":"2018-10-17T11:50:24","date_gmt":"2018-10-17T15:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=24792"},"modified":"2018-10-17T11:50:52","modified_gmt":"2018-10-17T15:50:52","slug":"board-of-public-works-awards-3-8-million-for-baltimore-city-parks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/10\/17\/board-of-public-works-awards-3-8-million-for-baltimore-city-parks\/","title":{"rendered":"Board of Public Works Awards $3.8 Million for Baltimore City Parks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Five Projects to Improve Accessibility, Connectivity and Usability<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/2\/1767\/42822606981_3dae2c2dab_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Baltimore City\" width=\"355\" height=\"266\" \/>The Board of Public Works today unanimously approved a <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> item that allocates $3,875,000 to Baltimore City for the construction, development and enhancement of five recreation projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Funding will be provided through <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/Pages\/Programs.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Program Open Space<\/a> Local as well as Baltimore City Direct grants through Program Open Space Stateside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThese new and revamped recreational spaces are a critical part of improving the quality of life for Baltimore City residents &#8211; especially our kids,\u201d said Governor Hogan. \u201cWe are committed to preserving our state\u2019s natural resources while providing well-maintained and safe green spaces, and we are proud to add these Baltimore City locations to the more than 6,000 park and conservation area projects our administration has funded through Program Open Space.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cConnecting more of Baltimore City to our natural and open space improves the quality of life of city residents and strengthens connections to our environment and natural resources,\u201d Maryland Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. \u201cThrough these projects we will make our natural world more accessible and sustainable for the enjoyment and use of all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The five approved projects include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bocek Park Athletic Center \u2013 Construction of two softball fields, two multipurpose fields, a sprayground, walking path with fitness equipment, community garden, playground and basketball court.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Druid Hill Park \u2013 Reconstructing the bathhouse and swimming pool, which will include a deep, main and wading pool. Americans with Disabilities Act upgrades are also planned.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mary Rodman Recreation Center \u2013 Replacing aging entrances, flooring, lights, restrooms, roof and windows to make the building more accessible, energy efficient and user-friendly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Park Trail Networks \u2013 Improvements to the citywide trail system, including construction on the Jones Falls Trail from Cylburn Park through Mount Washington.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Walter P. Carter Pool \u2013 Construction of a swimming pool and restrooms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Board of Public Works consists of Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, Comptroller Peter Franchot and Treasurer Nancy Kopp. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Governor Hogan\u2019s budget includes a total of $9.7 million in Program Open Space fund for Baltimore City.
