{"id":24709,"date":"2018-10-15T09:00:57","date_gmt":"2018-10-15T13:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=24709"},"modified":"2018-10-15T12:09:34","modified_gmt":"2018-10-15T16:09:34","slug":"department-launches-new-shellfish-aquaculture-application-tools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/10\/15\/department-launches-new-shellfish-aquaculture-application-tools\/","title":{"rendered":"Department Launches New Shellfish Aquaculture Application Tools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Customer Service Enhancements to Provide Early Notification of Proposed Leases<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4301\/35044563884_b86f15cb90_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of aquaculture cage\" width=\"350\" height=\"450\" \/>The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> today launched a new set of online tools to help educate and engage the public on proposed aquaculture lease applications.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The tools, which include a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/aquaculture\/applications.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">dynamic database<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/public.govdelivery.com\/accounts\/MDDNR\/subscriber\/new?qsp=CODE_RED\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">email notification system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, will provide information on pending and proposed commercial shellfish lease applications when they are received by the department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The customer service enhancements are being rolled out after a series of conversations and meetings with aquaculturists, commercial watermen, community and county leaders, homeowners associations and others throughout the Chesapeake Bay.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDuring our statewide listening sessions, we heard time and again that community leaders wanted to be alerted about proposed aquaculture projects earlier in the permitting process,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fishing and Boating Services<\/a> Director David Blazer said. \u201cThe new early notification system will provide near real-time data on all future aquaculture lease applications as well as information on location, status and type.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The new tools will provide users with information on submitted shellfish aquaculture lease applications, including the applicant, county, body of water where the proposed project is to be located as well as its size, status and type. Once an application is under review, it will also\u00a0include a map of the proposed lease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">C<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ommercial shellfish aquaculture lease applications <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">received <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">since Jan. 1, 2018,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and determined to be complete, will appear on the database<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. An application&#8217;s designation as &#8220;complete&#8221; does not mean that it is approved.
