Funding for Development on Pinecrest Local Park<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\"Photo<\/a>The Board of Public Works today unanimously approved a Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> item that will commit $1 million for the development of Pinecrest Local Park in Montgomery County. <\/span><\/p>\n

The 5.6-acre park, managed by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is adjacent to Pine Crest Elementary School.<\/span><\/p>\n

Program Open Space Local<\/a> funds will be used to construct improvements to the Silver Spring park, including regrading a multipurpose field, constructing a 6-foot wide accessible trail around the field and associated accessibility, drainage and stormwater management enhancements.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cProgram Open Space funds assist local communities to conserve and protect our natural resources as well as work to create exceptional recreational opportunities for our citizens and visitors,\u201d Maryland Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. \u201cIt is fantastic to see Montgomery County utilize this state program to ensure that Pinecrest Local Park is both accessible and enjoyable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Program Open Space Local provides both financial and technical assistance to local subdivisions for the acquisition, development and planning of public open space and recreational areas. More than 6,000 projects have been assisted through Program Open Space Local grants, including 648 projects in Montgomery County.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis project is a great opportunity to improve walkability and connectivity of this well-used park with the surrounding neighborhood as well as the adjacent elementary school,\u201d Montgomery County Park Development Division Chief Michael Ma said. \u201cIt will greatly enhance the quality of the field and associated open space for the elementary school students to enjoy during school recesses and to engage after-school activities. The entire park is also being improved to correct erosion issues, and improve drainage and overall condition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the state\u2019s investment of $1 million, Montgomery County is contributing $900,000 – \u00a0above the required match for Program Open Space Local funds – toward the project.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
