{"id":23820,"date":"2018-09-10T08:30:18","date_gmt":"2018-09-10T12:30:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=23820"},"modified":"2018-09-09T08:14:22","modified_gmt":"2018-09-09T12:14:22","slug":"wildlife-education-trunks-available-for-loan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/09\/10\/wildlife-education-trunks-available-for-loan\/","title":{"rendered":"Wildlife Education Trunks Available for Loan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Free Resource for Hands-On Learning<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/09\/Wildlife-education-trunk.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-23823\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/09\/Wildlife-education-trunk-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Wildlife Education Trunk\" width=\"351\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/09\/Wildlife-education-trunk-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/09\/Wildlife-education-trunk.jpg 530w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> is offering a variety of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/Education\/education_trunks.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wildlife education trunks<\/a> for use by classroom teachers, home-school educators, naturalists, scout leaders and other instructors.<\/p>\n<p>These unique, interdisciplinary teaching tools designed to educate and engage students about local wildlife while building on fundamental disciplines like art, language arts, math, physical education, science and social studies.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese trunks allow educators to bring wildlife into their classrooms with hands-on teaching tools like real pelts and activities to learn about the biology and ecology of the wildlife represented,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wildlife and Heritage Service<\/a>\u00a0Education and Outreach specialist Kerry Wixted said.<\/p>\n<p>Each trunk contains an educator guide with background information, lesson plans and hands-on K-12 activities, as well as activity supplies, books, furs, replica tracks, videos and other hands-on items for a complete educational experience.<\/p>\n<p>Wildlife education trunks are available for a variety of subjects, including aquatic invasive species, bats, black bears, furbearers, white-tailed deer and wild turkeys.<\/p>\n<p>These trunks can be borrowed free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis for up to two weeks. They are available at seven locations around the state.
