{"id":23623,"date":"2018-08-22T11:00:34","date_gmt":"2018-08-22T15:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=23623"},"modified":"2018-08-29T09:26:22","modified_gmt":"2018-08-29T13:26:22","slug":"25-million-approved-for-rural-legacy-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/08\/22\/25-million-approved-for-rural-legacy-program\/","title":{"rendered":"$25 Million Approved for Rural Legacy Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Harriet Tubman Rural Legacy Area Designated in Dorchester County; Five Other Areas Expanded<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/6\/5810\/30331805162_3a7b8d1fbc_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a rural legacy area\" width=\"350\" height=\"434\" \/>The Board of Public Works today approved 16 <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/Pages\/RuralLegacy\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rural Legacy Program<\/a>\u00a0grants \u2013 totaling over $25 million \u2013 that will provide dedicated state funding to permanently protect working farms and forests in designated areas across the state.<\/p>\n<p>Working through local government and private land trust sponsors, the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> acquires conservation easements from willing landowners to preserve large, contiguous tracts of open space that contain valuable agricultural, cultural, forestry or natural resources.<\/p>\n<p>The approved item includes the designation of the 28,300-acre Harriet Tubman Rural Legacy Area in Dorchester County. Two million dollars will go toward the newly-designated area, which will protect the natural land- and view-scape evocative of Harriet Tubman\u2019s life, legacy and work, and conserve lands containing and surrounding cultural and historic monuments and sites, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/tubman.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and Visitor Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since taking office, we have invested over $600 million in Program Open Space and other land conservation and preservation efforts, and this year we are proud to be fully funding all of these programs as part of our historic $4 billion investment in Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts,&#8221; said Governor Larry Hogan. &#8220;Our Rural Legacy Program is a critical piece in our work to protect and preserve our land for the greatest benefit for our state and the people who live and work here, including establishing the Harriet Tubman Rural Legacy Area in Dorchester County, which will protect this culturally significant site for years to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23650\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/JA5_4863.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23650\" class=\"wp-image-23650\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/JA5_4863-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Rural Legacy Program grantees by Joe Andrucyk\" width=\"250\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/JA5_4863-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/JA5_4863-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/JA5_4863-1024x819.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/JA5_4863.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-23650\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rural Legacy Program grant recipients courtesy of Joe Andrucyk.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The board also approved the expansion of five rural legacy areas, including the Coastal Bays Rural Legacy Area in Worcester County (16,600 acres), Dividing Creek Rural Legacy Area in Somerset and Worcester counties (27,877 acres), Fair Hill Rural Legacy Area in Cecil County (4,700 acres), Manor Rural Legacy Area in Baltimore and Harford counties (7 acres), and Nanticoke Rural Legacy Area in Dorchester County (1,846 acres).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe program works to conserve and maintain the rural character and countryside of our state now and for future generations,\u201d Maryland Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. \u201cThe influx of funding from the Hogan administration \u2013 the fifth most in the program\u2019s 20-year history \u2013 will protect our state\u2019s precious resources in perpetuity while providing for local resource-based industries, be it farming or forestry. By establishing new areas and expanding others we are benefiting our rural economy as well as our environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Rural Legacy Program grants were reviewed by the Rural Legacy Advisory Committee and approved by the Rural Legacy Board, which is chaired by Secretary Mark Belton and includes Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Joseph Bartenfelder and Maryland Department of Planning Secretary Robert McCord.<\/p>\n<p>Rural Legacy Areas are designed to protect working landscapes supporting a critical mass of resource-based economies, and are where properties who meet the Rural Legacy Program criteria are eligible to participate.
