Annual Competition Demonstrates Expertise, Tenacity<\/em><\/p>\n

Six teams of lifeguards from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>put their skills to the test in a competition held Aug. 7 at Hart-Miller Island State Park<\/a>\u00a0in Baltimore County.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Maryland Park Service<\/span><\/a>\u00a0hires more than 120 lifeguards each year to protect summer swimmers and waders at the state’s\u00a0beaches, lakes and pools<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>They continually complete strenuous skills training to maintain peak physical condition to guarantee the best protection available for state park patrons.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The annual competition brings\u00a0<\/span>these <\/span>lifeguards together from all across the state to compete in a variety of physical and skills-based challenges, including a beach flags competition, obstacle course, rescue relay and triathlon.\u00a0<\/span>State parks send their finest and fittest to compete for bragging rights and – of course – a trophy.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The lifeguard team from Assateague State Park<\/a> took first place, followed by Cunningham Falls State Park<\/a>\u00a0and Gunpowder Falls State Park<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“For many lifeguards, this is the highlight of the summer,” Gunpowder Falls State Park Ranger Brooke Bartko said. “The competition is not only a fun way to cap off a season of hard work, it’s also a great reminder of just how prepared our lifeguards are to keep swimmers safe.”<\/p>\n
