{"id":23367,"date":"2018-08-01T01:00:50","date_gmt":"2018-08-01T05:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=23367"},"modified":"2018-08-01T13:26:02","modified_gmt":"2018-08-01T17:26:02","slug":"belvedere-yacht-club-certified-as-clean-marina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/08\/01\/belvedere-yacht-club-certified-as-clean-marina\/","title":{"rendered":"Belvedere Yacht Club Certified as Clean Marina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Marks 150th Clean Marina and Partner in Maryland<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/IMG_0128.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/IMG_0128-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Mark and Diane Hagerty\" width=\"351\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mark and Diane Hagerty of Belvedere Yacht Club<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An Anne Arundel County yacht club recently passed inspection by the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> to earn the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Boating\/Pages\/cleanmarina\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Clean Marina Partner Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Belvedere Yacht Club in Arnold has met the criteria, which brings the total number of clean marinas and partners to 150, or roughly a quarter of the marinas in the state. In Anne Arundel County, 50 of the estimated 165 marinas are certified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is inspiring to see the dedication and passion these boatyard and marina operators and owners bring to achieving and maintaining this \u2018green\u2019 certification,\u201d Program Manager Donna Morrow said. \u201cBelvedere Yacht Club is a great example of Maryland&#8217;s\u00a0boating community stepping up for the bay and their customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The department evaluates participating marinas or yacht clubs on areas such emergency preparedness, stormwater management and waste containment and disposal. To pass, a marina must score between 75 and 85 percent in each area of the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/boating\/Documents\/checklist.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">checklis<\/a>t by implementing best practices from the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/boating\/Pages\/cleanmarina\/cmprogram.aspx#guidebook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Clean Marina Guidebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At Belvedere, the clubhouse voluntarily decided to stop using Styrofoam cups and disposal containers while incorporating solid waste recycling. The club maintains a spill response kit and developed Clean Marina guidance for all boaters.<\/p>\n<p>The Clean Marina program was developed in 1998 by a committee comprised of boatyard and marina operators, local and state governments, academics and boating groups with the goal of reducing nonpoint source pollution from marine facilities and recreational boats.
