{"id":22834,"date":"2018-07-10T08:00:42","date_gmt":"2018-07-10T12:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=22834"},"modified":"2018-07-11T09:27:42","modified_gmt":"2018-07-11T13:27:42","slug":"campers-pull-invasive-plants-at-new-germany-state-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/07\/10\/campers-pull-invasive-plants-at-new-germany-state-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Campers Pull Invasive Plants at New Germany"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Volunteers, Staff Battle Botanical Bullies<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-22835\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/image-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"244\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Teams of young women joined forces with the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/pages\/mcc.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Conservation Corps<\/a>\u00a0to remove more 700 pounds of invasive plants from <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/newgermany.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Germany State Park<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These volunteers, members of the Washington, D.C. Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, devoted much of June 20, working in the park as part of their annual summer camp.<\/p>\n<p>The teams targeted coltsfoot,\u00a0crown vetch, exotic bush honeysuckles, garlic mustard and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Documents\/Forest%20Pests_Japanese_Stiltgrass_rd.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japanese stiltgrass<\/a>, among other <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Invasives\/Pages\/Invasive-Description.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">invasives<\/a>.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cControlling invasive plants is one of the goals in our strategic management plan, so this was an important project for us,\u201d Park Manager Erin Thomas said. \u201cIt\u2019s exciting to have such a large group of volunteers helping us achieve this objective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The project was organized by local plant experts, Liz McDowell and Ron Boyer, both active volunteers with the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/newgermanyvolunteer.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Friends of New Germany<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Volunteers, Staff Battle Botanical Bullies Teams of young women joined forces with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Maryland Conservation Corps\u00a0to remove more 700 pounds of invasive plants from New Germany State Park.\u00a0 These volunteers, members of the Washington, D.C.
