Avid angler Dezi Collins of Mechanicsville reeled in his record 10.72 ounce catch June 11 at Gilbert Run Lake in Charles County.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Collins, along with a few friends, were fishing for black bass when something unusual hit his 5-inch Senko plastic worm. \u201cThis thing really had some weight,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biologists from the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> verified the species and its weight was certified by Thompson\u2019s Seafood.\u00a0The catch beats the previous 9.76-ounce record held since 2009 by Don Perantoni.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The warmouth, or <em>lepomis gulosus<\/em>, looks similar to a rock bass and is a member of the sunfish family.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Collins kept his record fish alive and plans to release it back into Gilbert Run Lake. \u201cI\u2019m not greedy &#8212; I\u2019d love for someone to experience this, too,\u201d Collins said.<\/p>\n<p>The department maintains\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/state-records.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state records<\/a>\u00a0in four divisions \u2013 Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal and Invasive \u2013 and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately-owned, fee-fishing waters are ineligible.<\/p>\n<p>Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should fill-out the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Documents\/srapplication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state record application<\/a>\u00a0and call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325.
