Brian Dvorak, an avid night angler, caught the fish off <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/pages\/central\/elknecklighthouse.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turkey Point<\/a> near the mouth of the Elk River. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNight fishing is what I do,\u201d Dvorak said. On that evening he brought in a few channel catfish and an American eel, but his last catch of the morning was &#8220;something different.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nA <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>\u00a0biologist confirmed the species and the fish was weighed on a certified scale at local grocer. Coming in at 9.61 pounds, Dvorak\u2019s catch beat the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/06\/13\/record-white-catfish-caught-in-southern-potomac-river\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous record<\/a> of 8.27 pounds, set in 2017, by 1.34 pounds.<!--more--><br \/>\nState biologists confirmed the species as a white catfish by examination of chin barbels and fin ray counts. The white catfish is one of two native catfish species that are found in Maryland\u2019s brackish tidal and fresh waters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can check this off my bucket list,&#8221; Dvorak said, adding he considers himself to be a passionate angler who dedicates himself to the sport.<\/p>\n<p>The department maintains\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/state-records.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state records for sport fish<\/a>\u00a0in four divisions \u2013 Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal and Invasive \u2013 and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately-owned, fee-fishing waters are ineligible.<\/p>\n<p>Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should fill-out the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Documents\/srapplication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state record application<\/a>\u00a0and call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325.
