Soares Jr<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Healthy and Safe Swimming Week runs\u00a0May 21-27, the week leading up to Memorial Day, the unofficial start of summer. The Secretaries of Maryland\u2019s Departments of Health, the Environment, and Natural Resources encourage all Marylanders to take note of swimming safety tips to ensure a safe and healthy swimming experience\u2014no matter where they swim.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWith Memorial Day approaching, many Marylanders will be heading to the pool or the beach,\u201d said Maryland Department of Health Secretary Robert R. Neall. \u201cWe\u2019re reminding Marylanders to keep swimming safety in mind to prevent injuries and drownings.\u00a0\u00a0We want everyone to swim healthy and stay healthy all year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cThe Department of the Environment partners with state agencies and\u00a0local governments to make a day at the beach a fun and healthy time for Maryland families,\u201d said Maryland Department of the Environment Secretary Ben Grumbles. \u201cBeach conditions are monitored from Western Maryland lakes to the Ocean City surf, with updated information readily available on the Maryland Healthy Beaches website and through smartphone apps. We also urge everyone to follow the website\u2019s do\u2019s and don\u2019ts for swimmers to stay healthy and waters to keep clean.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>\u201cMaryland\u2019s beautiful waters delight millions of people all summer, whether in the Atlantic surf, Chesapeake tides or cold mountain rivers.\u201d Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. \u201cIt\u2019s important to remember that water is also a potentially dangerous force of nature, and it\u2019s essential to follow the rules of swimming safety.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Swimming is one of Maryland\u2019s most popular sporting and leisure activities. This year\u2019s campaign will increase awareness of the simple things people can do to prevent the most common and serious health and safety risks associated with recreational water activities\u2014drownings and injuries, sunburns and potential infections:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>Never swim alone<\/li>\n<li>Always be aware of young children\u2019s activities and whereabouts<\/li>\n<li>Use swim vests on all young children at the beach and for weaker swimmers in pools<\/li>\n<li>Reapply sunscreen frequently throughout the day<\/li>\n<li>Drink plenty of fluids<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t swallow pool or beach water<\/li>\n<li>Change children\u2019s diapers often to minimize the risk of contaminating water<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t swim when you have diarrhea, or if you have open skin wounds or infections<\/li>\n<li>Stay out of the water if it has a strange color<\/li>\n<li>Use bug spray<\/li>\n<li>Learn how to avoid and to escape rip currents<\/li>\n<li>For pool owners, follow package directions when using pool chemicals<\/li>\n<li>Save contact information for emergency personnel in your cell phone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is easy to stay safe and healthy while enjoying the water.\u00a0 We urge you to keep your family healthy and safe this summer season, so you can enjoy all that Maryland\u2019s recreational waters have to offer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">For more information, call the Maryland Department of Health\u2019s Environmental Health Helpline at\u00a01-866-703-3266, or email\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:mdh.envhealth@maryland.gov\">mdh.envhealth@maryland.gov<\/a>.
