{"id":20745,"date":"2018-04-04T08:00:05","date_gmt":"2018-04-04T12:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=20745"},"modified":"2018-07-11T09:13:30","modified_gmt":"2018-07-11T13:13:30","slug":"free-tree-seedlings-available-for-harford-county-landowners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/04\/04\/free-tree-seedlings-available-for-harford-county-landowners\/","title":{"rendered":"Free Tree Seedlings Available for Harford County Landowners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Riparian Homeowners Can Help Improve Water Quality<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/9\/8858\/18603651791_099e72289b_n.jpg\" alt=\"Adult and child planting tree seedling\" width=\"320\" height=\"213\" \/>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>\u00a0is offering free tree seedlings to help improve water quality in Harford County.<\/p>\n<p>County\u00a0landowners who have a creek, drainage ditch, stream or other waterway on or near their property are eligible for free trees through the department\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/programs\/Backyard-Buffer-Program.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Backyard Buffers<\/a>\u00a0program.<!--more--><span id=\"more-20678\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Trees planted along waterways help improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients, lowering peak water temperatures,\u00a0reducing sediment and stabilizing stream banks.<\/p>\n<p>Each \u201cbuffer in a bag\u201d contains 25 native bare-root tree seedlings suitable for planting in moist soil conditions. The bundle includes a mix of red bud, river birch, hazelnut, sycamore and swamp white oak. All seedlings are 1-year-old and approximately 8 to 10 inches tall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Forest Service<\/a>\u00a0staff will provide information on tree maintenance and planting techniques, in addition to suggestions on other good native species at the time of pick up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Requests must be received by April 20. Interested property owners should contact Forester Frank Lopez\u00a0preferably by <a href=\"mailto:frank.lopez1@maryland.gov\">email<\/a> or by calling 410-836-4564 to reserve seedlings.
