{"id":20739,"date":"2018-03-28T10:30:50","date_gmt":"2018-03-28T14:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=20739"},"modified":"2018-03-28T10:50:38","modified_gmt":"2018-03-28T14:50:38","slug":"pumpout-grants-available-for-maryland-marinas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/03\/28\/pumpout-grants-available-for-maryland-marinas\/","title":{"rendered":"Pumpout Grants Available for Maryland Marinas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Deadline is April 15<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/8\/7326\/26595964423_5588801e2b.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of boating pumpout station at marina\" width=\"350\" height=\"313\" \/>Maryland marinas can now apply for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Boating\/Pages\/pumpout\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pumpout Operations and Maintenance grants<\/a>\u00a0through the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These grants reimburse marinas for the expense of operating and maintaining pumpout stations. <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/boating\/Documents\/2018_Pumpout_OM_Application.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Applications<\/a>\u00a0due April 15.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>State and federal laws prohibit the discharge of raw sewage from boats, so reliable <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Boating\/Pages\/pumpout\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pumpout stations<\/a> at marinas are essential for the thousands of boats traversing Maryland waters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaryland was the first state to offer grants to ensure that pumpout stations are well dispersed and maintained across the state,\u201d Center for Marine and Coastal Stewardship Program Manager Donna Morrow said. \u201cThese stations provide a needed service to our state\u2019s boating community and supports our broader efforts to maintain the health of Chesapeake Bay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, marinas participating in this program removed about 586,000 gallons of waste from recreational boats for proper disposal ashore. Participating marinas\u00a0must agree to serve the general boating public during reasonable business hours; can generally charge no more than $5 per pumpout;\u00a0and\u00a0must deduct any pumpout charges from expenses before seeking reimbursement from the department.<\/p>\n<p>State law requires marinas with more than 50 slips, as well as any new or expanding marina, to have a pumpout station. Grant applications for new installations or replacements, in addition to operations and maintenance, are also available\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Boating\/Pages\/pumpout\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The grants are made available through federal Clean Vessel Act and state <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Boating\/Pages\/grants.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Waterway Improvement Fund<\/a>, which are both funded by fees and taxes paid by boaters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deadline is April 15 Maryland marinas can now apply for\u00a0Pumpout Operations and Maintenance grants\u00a0through the\u00a0Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
