{"id":20601,"date":"2018-03-19T08:00:22","date_gmt":"2018-03-19T12:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=20601"},"modified":"2018-07-11T09:13:34","modified_gmt":"2018-07-11T13:13:34","slug":"free-tree-seedlings-available-for-lower-eastern-shore-landowners-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/03\/19\/free-tree-seedlings-available-for-lower-eastern-shore-landowners-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Free Tree Seedlings Available for Lower Eastern Shore Landowners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><i>Available to Riparian<\/i>\u00a0Homeowners in Dorchester and Wicomico<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/4\/3770\/12003681036_bbb94b45cb_b_d.jpg\" width=\"351\" height=\"234\" \/>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>\u00a0is offering free trees to help improve water quality in targeted Lower Eastern Shore communities.<\/p>\n<p>Dorchester and Wicomico County landowners who have a creek, drainage ditch, stream or other waterway on or near their property are eligible for free tree seedlings through the department\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/programs\/Backyard-Buffer-Program.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Backyard Buffers<\/a>\u00a0program.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Trees planted along waterways help enhance and improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients, reducing sediment, stabilizing stream banks and\u00a0lowering water temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Each \u201cbuffer in a bag\u201d contains 25 native, bare-root tree seedlings suited for planting in wet soil conditions. The bundle will include five\u00a0of each species: buttonbush, hazel alder, red osier dogwood, willow oak and white oak. All seedlings are 1-year-old and approximately 8 to 10 inches tall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Forest Service<\/a>\u00a0staff will provide information on tree maintenance and planting techniques, in addition to suggestions on other good native species, at pick\u00a0up which will take place April 21 for both counties.\u00a0The Dorchester pick up location is the Spocott Windmill on Route 343 near Cambridge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.\u00a0The Wicomico pick up location is the University of Maryland Extension Office at 28674 Old Quantico Road in Salisbury from 10 a.m. to noon.<\/p>\n<p>The deadline for placing orders is April 20.
