{"id":20510,"date":"2018-03-12T10:41:46","date_gmt":"2018-03-12T14:41:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=20510"},"modified":"2018-07-11T09:13:38","modified_gmt":"2018-07-11T13:13:38","slug":"free-tree-seedlings-available-for-anne-arundel-county-landowners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/03\/12\/free-tree-seedlings-available-for-anne-arundel-county-landowners\/","title":{"rendered":"Free Tree Seedlings Available for Anne Arundel County Landowners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Riparian Homeowners Can Help Improve Water Quality<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/4\/3756\/10072262666_f44f61f76c.jpg\" alt=\"Two children standing next to newly planted tree seedling\" width=\"352\" height=\"234\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>\u00a0is offering free tree plantings to help improve water quality in targeted Anne Arundel communities.<\/p>\n<p>County landowners\u00a0who have a ditch, creek, stream, or other waterway on or near their property are eligible for free tree or shrub seedlings through the department\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/programs\/Backyard-Buffer-Program.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Backyard Buffers<\/a>\u00a0program.<\/p>\n<p>Trees and shrubs planted along waterways help enhance and improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients, reducing sediment, stabilizing stream banks and\u00a0lowering water temperatures.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Each \u201cbuffer in a bag\u201d contains native bare-root seedlings suited for planting in Anne Arundel County. There are different types of bundles available depending on the type and size of terrain. Every bundle will include seedlings that are 1-year-old and about 8 to 10 inches tall.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Forest Service<\/a>\u00a0and the Anne Arundel Watershed Stewards Academy provide these bundles by working together through the Backyard Buffers program. Staff will supply information on tree maintenance and planting techniques, in addition to suggestions on other good native species at the time of pick up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Requests must be received by March 20. Interested homeowners should contact <a href=\"mailto:Justin.arseneault@maryland.gov\">Justin Arseneault<\/a> at 410-360-8421 to reserve their seedlings. Bundles will be available for pick up after March 20.
