{"id":20215,"date":"2018-02-23T09:47:00","date_gmt":"2018-02-23T14:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=20215"},"modified":"2018-07-11T09:13:41","modified_gmt":"2018-07-11T13:13:41","slug":"free-tree-seedlings-available-for-allegany-county-landowners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/02\/23\/free-tree-seedlings-available-for-allegany-county-landowners\/","title":{"rendered":"Free Tree Seedlings Available for Allegany County Landowners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Riparian Homeowners Can Help Improve Water Quality<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/440\/18413791218_aec6b0bd42_b.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of people planting a tree\" width=\"352\" height=\"234\" \/>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>\u00a0is offering free tree plantings to help improve water quality in targeted Allegany County communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>County\u00a0landowners who have a creek, drainage ditch, stream or other waterway on or near their property are eligible for free tree seedlings through the department\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/programs\/Backyard-Buffer-Program.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Backyard Buffers<\/a>\u00a0program.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Each \u201cBuffer in a Bag\u201d contains 25 native bare-root tree and shrub seedlings suitable for planting in moist soil conditions. The bundle will include a mix of swamp white oak, common ninebark, silver maple, river birch and white pine.\u00a0Quantities are limited, and reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Forest Service<\/a>\u00a0staff will provide information on tree planting and growing techniques, planting arrangements, tree maintenance, and tips about other good native species choices at the time of pick up.\u00a0Trees planted along waterways help improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients, reducing sediment, lowering peak water temperatures and stabilizing stream banks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Requests must be received by March 30.
