{"id":20196,"date":"2018-02-22T15:00:04","date_gmt":"2018-02-22T20:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=20196"},"modified":"2018-07-11T09:13:41","modified_gmt":"2018-07-11T13:13:41","slug":"maryland-arbor-day-poster-contest-winners-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/02\/22\/maryland-arbor-day-poster-contest-winners-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland Arbor Day Poster Contest Winners Announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>First Lady<\/em><em> Yumi Hogan Participates as Special Judge; Top Entries\u2019 Schools Receive Free Tree Plantings<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4758\/40381428022_ce71b34ecf_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan with Arbor Day Poster Contest judges\" width=\"351\" height=\"454\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan with Arbor Day Poster Contest judges<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fifth-grade students who submitted Arbor Day posters to the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> had their work judged today by a panel of forestry experts and a special guest judge, Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan, who is an accomplished artist and adjunct professor at Maryland Institute College of Art.<\/p>\n<p>The posters were created using varied artistic techniques, including colored pencils, crayons, markers and paint, all illustrating this year\u2019s contest theme, \u201cTrees are Terrific\u2026and Make Communities Healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Original artwork focused on trees cleaning the air, creating shade and generally contributing to healthy outdoor living.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cI\u2019m greatly impressed by the display of talent from these Maryland fifth-graders,\u201d First Lady Yumi Hogan said. \u201cThis Arbor Day Poster Contest is a great way to celebrate the value of forests and trees through art, which allows students to express how trees affect them on a personal level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/accessdnr\/sets\/72157688107565830\" title=\"2018 Arbor Day Poster Contest Winners by Maryland DNR, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4747\/38615461580_afb5dbdbac_c.jpg\" width=\"624\" height=\"800\" alt=\"First Place - Carroll County\"><\/a><script async src=\"https:\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The first-place winner is Annah Landry from Carroll County. Annah&#8217;s school will receive a prize of 15 trees. The second-place winner is Garrett Schlag from Talbot County. Garrett&#8217;s school will receive 10 trees for planting. The third-place winner is Addison Souza from Queen Anne&#8217;s County. Addison&#8217;s school will receive five trees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is wonderful to see the creativity and passion of our fifth-grade students come to life through this poster contest,\u201d Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. \u201cTheir demonstrated connection to the environment and our natural resources is as strong and sustainable as our forests and trees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Forest Service<\/a> accepted hundreds of entries for the 2018 Arbor Day Poster Contest. Previously selected winners from each participating county were then forwarded for judging by the volunteer Maryland Urban and Community Forest Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The Arbor Day Poster Contest is hosted annually by the department\u2019s Tree-Mendous Maryland Program.
