{"id":19933,"date":"2018-02-07T08:00:21","date_gmt":"2018-02-07T13:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=19933"},"modified":"2018-07-11T09:13:51","modified_gmt":"2018-07-11T13:13:51","slug":"youth-fishing-rodeos-set-for-spring-and-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/02\/07\/youth-fishing-rodeos-set-for-spring-and-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"Youth Fishing Rodeos Set for 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Young Anglers Can Attend Free Events in 11 Different Counties<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/3\/2829\/9518056558_08e47db1bd.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of child fishing\" width=\"351\" height=\"234\" \/>Even as winter gripped the region, the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> has been making plans for the state&#8217;s young anglers when spring and summer finally arrive.<\/p>\n<p>This year, 38 different organizations in 11 counties across the state are hosting <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Documents\/Rodeo_Schedule.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">youth fishing rodeos<\/a>, providing fun and engaging educational opportunities for nearly 5,000 children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is really exciting time of year,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/youth\/rodeo.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Youth Fishing Rodeo Program<\/a> Coordinator Mike Anderson, who works with local organizations in developing these department-sponsored events. \u201cFishing rodeos provide opportunities to learn basic angling skills in a fun and safe environment, develop an understanding of the environment and natural resources and provide a unique experience that fosters an interest in conservation and fishing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Rodeo events are held from early spring until late fall, with the majority are held in spring and summer. To help ensure everyone has a chance to earn their \u201cfirst catch,\u201d Anderson and his team are helping raise and supply more than 6,000 hybrid sunfish for this year\u2019s events.<\/p>\n<p>Maryland\u2019s youth fishing rodeo program receives financial support from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program.<\/p>\n<p>All are <strong>free<\/strong> and open to the public, although due to space limitations at some venues, attendees should call the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Documents\/Rodeo_Schedule.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contact number listed<\/a> to register.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Young Anglers Can Attend Free Events in 11 Different Counties Even as winter gripped the region, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources has been making plans for the state&#8217;s young anglers when spring and summer finally arrive.
