{"id":19911,"date":"2018-02-07T10:42:16","date_gmt":"2018-02-07T15:42:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=19911"},"modified":"2018-07-11T09:13:51","modified_gmt":"2018-07-11T13:13:51","slug":"195-acres-permanently-protected-in-washington-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/02\/07\/195-acres-permanently-protected-in-washington-county\/","title":{"rendered":"195 Acres Permanently Protected in Washington County"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><u><\/u><em>Board of Public Works Approves Two Department Items<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-19912\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/02\/DSC00637-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Pleasant Valley\" width=\"350\" height=\"254\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Board of Public Works unanimously approved two <a href=\"dnr.maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> items today that will permanently protect 195 acres in Washington County through the department\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/Pages\/RuralLegacy\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rural Legacy<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/habitat\/milo.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conservation Reserve Enhancement<\/a> permanent easement programs.<\/p>\n<p>The two easements will complete the protection of the entire Pleasant Valley Livestock, LLC property in Smithsburg.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe department leveraged its long-standing partnership with Washington County to permanently conserve and preserve this pristine land and waterway,\u201d Maryland Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. \u201cOur easements will cover productive and working farmland, streamside forests, natural areas and wetlands, and safeguard the viewshed and water quality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Rural Legacy Program easement protects 105 acres of cultivated fields, farm operation and homestead areas, while the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program easement protects the remaining 89 acres of forested slopes and stream\u00a0valley\u00a0corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Together, these programs, with the assistance of <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/land\/Pages\/ProgramOpenSpace\/Program-Open-Space-Stateside-Targeting.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Program Open Space<\/a>, will enhance stream buffers on Little Antietam Creek and protect wildlife habitat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Board of Public Works Approves Two Department Items The Board of Public Works unanimously approved two Maryland Department of Natural Resources items today that will permanently protect 195 acres in Washington County through the department\u2019s Rural Legacy and Conservation Reserve Enhancement permanent easement programs.
