{"id":19827,"date":"2018-03-11T08:00:05","date_gmt":"2018-03-11T12:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=19827"},"modified":"2018-07-11T09:13:39","modified_gmt":"2018-07-11T13:13:39","slug":"maple-syrup-festival-returns-to-cunningham-falls-state-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/03\/11\/maple-syrup-festival-returns-to-cunningham-falls-state-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Maple Syrup Festival Returns to Cunningham Falls State Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Mountain Maryland Tradition Continues March 17-18<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/2\/1641\/25530523642_dc923d0466_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Maple Syrup Festival by Ranger Mark Spurrier\" width=\"350\" height=\"353\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/cunningham.aspx\">Cunningham Falls State Park<\/a>\u00a0hosts its 48th Annual Maple Syrup Making Demonstrations for a second and final weekend of the year, March 17-18, from\u00a010 a.m. to 2 p.m.\u00a0The festivities will take place in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/parkmaps\/houckmap.aspx\">William Houck Area<\/a>, located at\u00a014039 Catoctin Hollow Road in Thurmont.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Park Service<\/a> rangers and volunteers will demonstrate the traditional way to craft this sweet concoction, as it has been done in North American forests since before the arrival of European settlers.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees are welcome to relax on a hayride and watch as sap is collected. Visitors are also invited to enjoy a hot pancake breakfast, join in children\u2019s activities, and listen to live bluegrass and folk music in a large, heated tent.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis Catoctin Mountain tradition is a fun and delicious event that the whole family can enjoy,\u201d Park Manager Mark Spurrier said. \u201cIt may sound sappy but we love showcasing our beautiful property and bountiful trees with the thousands of visitors that come out to our Maple Syrup Festival each and every year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">New this year, the festival will feature a Maple Sap Fun Run March 17 as part of the department&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/HealthyParks.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Healthy Parks, Healthy People<\/a> initiative. Participants of all ages can participate in a noncompetitive 1.5-mile fun run\/walk along a scenic roadway that showcases the park\u2019s sap-producing maple trees. Weather permitting, kick off will be at 9:30 a.m. in the South Beach parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ofj0tVgXcp4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">A donation of $3 per person or $2 per person for youth groups is requested to attend the festival. Children in safety seats are free. A pancake and sausage breakfast will be\u00a0served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at an additional cash-only cost. In addition, a retail area with maple products such as candy, cream and syrup will be open for cash-and-carry sales.
