Millard Tawes conducted <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/boating\/Pages\/ice_breaking.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emergency icebreaking operations<\/a> to Tangier Island, Virginia, answering a call for help from our neighboring state. The crucial mission helped deliver food, fuel, mail, medications and other essential items to the island, which like nearby Smith Island, Maryland is usually only accessible by water.\u00a0The Tawes sailed from Crisfield Thursday morning following a request coordinated through the Maryland Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard. On arrival, a\u00a0crowd of more than two dozen Tangier Island residents welcomed the crew and helped offload the supplies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4687\/38571422965_2d8b4ca161_c.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of ice-breaking from inside cabin\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/>The 100-foot Tawes, which regularly clears ice between Crisfield and Smith Island, is one of <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/boating\/Documents\/IceBreakingletter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four ice-breaking vessels<\/a> stationed by the Maryland Department of Resources around the Chesapeake Bay every winter ice season &#8211; the buoy tenders John C. Widener in Annapolis and A.V. Sandusky in Kent Narrows, plus the tugboat Big Lou in the Choptank River.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>J.
