{"id":19562,"date":"2018-01-09T16:33:59","date_gmt":"2018-01-09T21:33:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=19562"},"modified":"2018-01-09T16:35:25","modified_gmt":"2018-01-09T21:35:25","slug":"partners-preserve-104-acres-in-harford-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2018\/01\/09\/partners-preserve-104-acres-in-harford-county\/","title":{"rendered":"Partners Preserve 104 Acres in Harford County"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Otter Creek Preserve Protected Forever<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/01\/HLT-Otter-Creek-Preserve2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-19565\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/01\/HLT-Otter-Creek-Preserve2.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of protected woodland known as Otter Creek Preserve in Harford County\" width=\"351\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/01\/HLT-Otter-Creek-Preserve2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/01\/HLT-Otter-Creek-Preserve2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/met\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Maryland Environmental Trust<\/a>\u00a0partnered with the Harford Land Trust to permanently protect a 104-acre woodland tract in Edgewood.<\/p>\n<p>The land trust gifted the conservation easement to ensure the area\u2019s rich ecological resources and scenic land along Willoughby Beach Road were safeguarded for the benefit of future generations.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re pleased to partner with the Harford Land Trust to support their efforts to ensure that Harford County\u2019s most important natural and working lands remain an important part of the fabric of the community,\u201d Maryland Environmental Trust Director Bill Leahy said. \u201cLocal land trusts are critical to our ability to accomplish our conservation mission of long-term stewardship of Maryland\u2019s natural resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The property, known as Otter Creek Preserve, comprises deciduous woodlands and associated vernal pools in a natural community known as flatwoods \u2014 the largest known intact woodland of its kind in Harford County.\u00a0The vernal pools provide breeding and feeding habitat for a number of amphibians, invertebrates and reptiles. The woodland is habitat for many bird species, including the\u00a0Acadian Flycatcher,<br \/>\nHairy Woodpecker, Kentucky Warbler, Ovenbird, Red-eyed Vireo and Scarlet Tanager.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful to have been given this unique property so many years ago, and we are incredibly pleased to donate this conservation easement that will ensure the property remains protected forever,\u201d Harford Land Trust Executive Director Kristin Kirkwood said. \u201cWe value our strong partnership with the Maryland Environmental Trust and look forward to continued collaboration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Otter Creek Preserve property was donated to Harford Land Trust about 20 years ago by a developer of an adjacent neighborhood to preserve the unique habitat and scenic character of the woodlands.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Otter Creek Preserve Protected Forever The Maryland Environmental Trust\u00a0partnered with the Harford Land Trust to permanently protect a 104-acre woodland tract in Edgewood.
