{"id":19228,"date":"2017-12-15T13:30:16","date_gmt":"2017-12-15T18:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=19228"},"modified":"2018-01-02T06:33:29","modified_gmt":"2018-01-02T11:33:29","slug":"maryland-announces-comprehensive-oyster-restoration-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/12\/15\/maryland-announces-comprehensive-oyster-restoration-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland Announces Comprehensive Oyster Restoration Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Breton Bay and St. Mary\u2019s River Selected for Large-Scale Restoration;<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">State Pledges Investment in Manokin, Nanticoke and Severn Sanctuaries<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/12\/Map4thand5thZoomed.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19252 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/12\/Map4thand5thZoomed.jpg\" alt=\"Map of Breton Bay and St. Mary's River\" width=\"349\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/12\/Map4thand5thZoomed.jpg 3300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/12\/Map4thand5thZoomed-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/12\/Map4thand5thZoomed-768x593.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/12\/Map4thand5thZoomed-1024x791.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 349px) 100vw, 349px\" \/><\/a>The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0today announced a comprehensive plan on oyster restoration, including its intention to recommend Breton Bay and the upper St. Mary\u2019s River as the fourth and fifth tributaries to satisfy the state\u2019s commitment to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement goal of restoring native oyster habitat and populations in five tributaries by 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The department\u2019s selection complements ongoing large-scale oyster restoration activities in Harris Creek, the Little Choptank River and the Tred Avon River.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMaryland is committed to restoring the oyster population throughout the Chesapeake Bay for both ecological and economic reasons,\u201d Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis keystone species builds the foundation of a healthy marine ecosystem, cleaning and filtering water, while also serving as the backbone of our fisheries-based economy, be it aquaculture or commercial harvesting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The recommendations will be shared with the Maryland Oyster Restoration Interagency Workgroup, which includes the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The department will also gather input from citizens, communities and stakeholders in an open and transparent public comment process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Breton Bay intends to be restored with the assistance of the state\u2019s federal partners while work in the upper section of the St. Mary\u2019s River would be conducted by the state. All contracts for seed planting and substrate placement in the final two restoration sites will be competitively bid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThese restoration recommendations strike the right balance between the environment and the economy by concentrating limited yet targeted resources on existing sanctuaries with the most potential for success, based on the best available science,\u201d Belton said. \u201cThese two sites have the broad support of environmentalists and riverkeepers as well as county leaders and watermen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Along with its restoration selections, the state also plans to study and survey existing state oyster sanctuaries around Annapolis and the Lower Eastern Shore.
