{"id":18805,"date":"2017-11-27T08:00:55","date_gmt":"2017-11-27T13:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=18805"},"modified":"2017-12-03T07:13:13","modified_gmt":"2017-12-03T12:13:13","slug":"21-million-available-for-chesapeake-bay-restoration-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/11\/27\/21-million-available-for-chesapeake-bay-restoration-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"$21 Million Available for Chesapeake Bay Restoration Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund\u00a0Focuses on Water Quality;<br \/>\nLocal Governments and Nonprofits Encouraged to Submit Letters by Jan. 19<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/4\/3835\/15106474737_e462d47edf_b.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of sunset by Mark Dignen\" width=\"350\" height=\"262\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Terrapin Park Driftwood Sunset by Mark Dignen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> invites local governments and nonprofit organizations to apply for funding to help restore the Chesapeake Bay and improve water quality.<\/p>\n<p>Through the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/ccs\/Pages\/funding\/trust-fund.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund<\/a>, the department plans to allocate and award about $21 million to local projects aimed at reducing nonpoint source pollution caused by excess nutrients and sediment.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Larry Hogan has lauded the program and demonstrated his commitment to Chesapeake Bay restoration by becoming the first governor in Maryland history to fully fund the Trust Fund for two consecutive years.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Trust Fund focuses on shovel-ready projects that achieve the greatest environmental benefit at the best cost,\u201d Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. \u201cThe program works with our partners in local governments and nonprofits to maximize benefits, targeting funds geographically, engaging communities and holding everyone accountable to the results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Trust Fund helps the state accelerate bay restoration goals by focusing resources on specifically designed and implemented projects, and has directed over $400 million to over 2,100 projects while supporting 2,200 jobs.\u00a0It directs critical grant funding to the most cost-effective and efficient water quality improvement projects in the state that result in the highest level of pollution reduction as a return of the state\u2019s investment.<\/p>\n<p>Interested applicants for funding in Fiscal Year 2019 are encouraged to <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/ccs\/Pages\/funding\/trust-fund_grants.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">submit letters of intent<\/a> by Jan. 19, 2018, with full proposals due March 30, 2018.
