{"id":17550,"date":"2017-09-26T13:53:25","date_gmt":"2017-09-26T17:53:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=17550"},"modified":"2017-09-28T08:20:57","modified_gmt":"2017-09-28T12:20:57","slug":"affordable-and-attractive-trees-available-for-public-planting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/09\/26\/affordable-and-attractive-trees-available-for-public-planting\/","title":{"rendered":"Affordable and Attractive Trees Available for Public Planting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Tree-Mendous Maryland Orders Being Accepted; More Selections and Sizes Available<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/285\/18413864670_9551072a93.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of volunteers planting trees\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>\u00a0aims to expand tree cover on public lands across the state, offering\u00a0affordable and attractive trees for planting on community lands and open space through its\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/treemendous\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tree-Mendous Maryland<\/a>\u00a0program.<\/p>\n<p>New this year, the department is <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Documents\/Fall_2017_TreeMendous_Order_Form.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">offering<\/a>\u00a0nearly double the number of high quality, native shrubs and trees, which are grown and provided by Clear Ridge Nursery in Carroll County.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAutumn is a great time to plant native species because shrubbery and trees can survive and thrive over the winter months,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Forest Service<\/a> Director Don VanHassent said. \u201cThere is certainly affordable, attractive and beneficial greenery for every public property and space among our diverse and robust offerings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Church, civic, community and school groups, homeowners associations, local governments, nonprofits, and others are eligible to purchase plantings from the Tree-Mendous program, as long as the shrubs and trees are planted on community and public land with prior approval from the landowner.<\/p>\n<p>Since starting Tree-Mendous Maryland in 1989, the Maryland\u00a0Forest Service\u00a0has assisted more than 3,000 groups and organizations with plantings.
