Virginia creeper winding itself around the hickories is showing up a blazing scarlet, and the oaks are just now starting to change.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile in Washington County around\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/southmountainbattlefield.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Mountain State Battlefield<\/a> the colors are about 10 percent turned with a peak expected in late October. Migrating eagles and hawks can be observed from the summit at <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/washington.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Monument State Park<\/a> and the beautiful reflections in the lake at <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/greenbrier.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenbrier State Park<\/a>\u00a0make for spectacular photography and viewing opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Did you know that the Maryland portion of the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/at.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Appalachian National Scenic Trail<\/a> follows the ridge line of South Mountain, beginning at Pen Mar? It extends 40 miles south to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/choh\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park<\/a>, affording hikers many scenic vistas.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17508\" style=\"width: 179px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17508\" class=\" wp-image-17508\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/09\/Acer_saccharum_Swarthmore.png\" alt=\"Sugar Maple\" width=\"169\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/09\/Acer_saccharum_Swarthmore.png 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/09\/Acer_saccharum_Swarthmore-240x300.png 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17508\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sugar Maple<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Central Maryland is just beginning to see changes. <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/central\/seneca.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seneca Creek State Park<\/a> in Montgomery County reports the black gums and flowering dogwoods are in full color, with hickory, maples and oaks foliage just beginning to show.<\/p>\n<p>In north central Maryland, crab apples and sugar maples are just now starting to show signs of color.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/public.govdelivery.com\/accounts\/MDDNR\/subscriber\/new?qsp=CODE_RED\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sign up today<\/a>\u00a0to receive weekly reports showcasing the Old Line State\u2019s vibrant fall foliage and best autumn festivals or call 800-LEAVES1.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/fortfrederick.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fort Frederick State Park<\/a> in Washington County will host its annual <a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/10\/03\/fort-frederick-offers-look-into-civil-wars-1862-maryland-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Civil War event<\/a>\u00a0Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Commemorating the fort\u2019s role in the war, re-enactors will assemble for a weekend of living history and tactics demonstrations.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17511\" style=\"width: 185px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/brunswickmd.gov\/railroad_days\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17511\" class=\"wp-image-17511\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/09\/BrunsworkRRDays.png\" alt=\"Young boy waiting for the train in Brunswick MD\" width=\"175\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17511\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Young boy waiting for the train in Brunswick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In Frederick County, the <a href=\"http:\/\/brunswickmd.gov\/railroad_days\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">34th Annual Brunswick Railroad Days<\/a>\u00a0is a unique festival celebrating the town&#8217;s heritage as one of the largest rail yards in the nation. Fun activities Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., include nonstop, round-trip train rides from Brunswick to Buck Lodge, exhibits by the B&amp;O Railroad Historical Society, model trains, arts and crafts, live music and lots of children&#8217;s activities.<\/p>\n<p>In nearby Frederick, admission is free for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitfrederick.org\/event\/fall-festival-at-rose-hill-manor\/7125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fall Festival at Rose Hill Manor Park<\/a>\u00a0Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hayrides, farm exhibits, animals, hands-on crafts, and games are on the agenda, with special attractions like a tractor pull, cake auction and kiddie pedal tractor pull.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annapolisboatshows.com\/united-states-sailboat-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States Sailboat Show<\/a> runs through Monday along the waterfront of historic downtown Annapolis, the sailing capital of the U.S. The nation\u2019s largest and oldest in-water sailboat show &#8211; attracting more than 50,000 boating enthusiasts from around the world &#8211; features new sailboats, sailing accessories, equipment and services, and live entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>Nearby is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitmaryland.org\/event\/bowie-international-festival\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bowie International Festival<\/a>\u00a0Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., where you can travel around the world enjoying international dance, food, music and more. Join Ranger Ledbetter Sunday, 3 to 4:30 p.m. for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/go.activecalendar.com\/doit-md\/event\/blair-witch-heritage-hike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blair Witch Heritage Hike<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/friendsofmallows.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Get into Mallows Bay Day<\/a>, a cleanup and family fun day Saturday runs from noon to 6 p.m. in Charles County. Activities include educational exhibits, kayak tours, net seining and fish identification, history and nature walks, and even a food truck. Bring a canoe or kayak or walk along the shore to get a glimpse at this potential <a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/01\/06\/mallows-bay-national-marine-sanctuary-designation-moves-forward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Marine Sanctuary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the Eastern Shore, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.celticfest.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">28th Annual Chesapeake Celtic Festival<\/a>\u00a0is being held in Snow Hill Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is a great event for the whole family and includes dancing, bands, bagpipes and drums, storytelling, artisans and more.<\/p>\n<p>In Dorchester County the <a href=\"http:\/\/visitdorchester.org\/events\/hurlock-fall-fest-train-rides-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hurlock Fall Fest and Train Ride<\/a>\u00a0Saturday runs in conjunction with the 125th Anniversary of the Town of Hurlock. It starts with a parade at 10 a.m. and ends with fireworks at dusk.<\/p>\n<p>If you are near Cambridge, take time to visit the nationally-acclaimed <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/tubman.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and Visitor Center<\/a>. On Sunday, admission to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/refuge\/Blackwater\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge<\/a> is free in honor of National Wildlife Refuge Week. Blackwater includes more than 27,000 acres of forest and marshland as well as the four-mile Wildlife Drive, which can be enjoyed by bike, car or foot.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>If you\u2019re planning a get-away this weekend, keep in mind that park cabins are still available for the fall season.
