{"id":17203,"date":"2017-09-21T08:00:27","date_gmt":"2017-09-21T12:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=17203"},"modified":"2017-10-05T13:36:07","modified_gmt":"2017-10-05T17:36:07","slug":"pocomoke-river-state-park-celebrates-50th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/09\/21\/pocomoke-river-state-park-celebrates-50th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Pocomoke River State Park Celebrates 50th Anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>All-Day Celebration Sept. 30 Features Outdoor Events and Open House<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/09\/Pocomoke-50th-Graphic-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/09\/Pocomoke-50th-Graphic-3-1024x1015.png\" alt=\"Logo for Pocomoke River State Park's Fiftieth Anniversary\" width=\"350\" height=\"347\" \/><\/a>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>\u00a0proudly celebrates\u00a0the golden anniversary of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/pocomokeriver.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pocomoke River State Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Marylanders are invited Sept. 30 to take part in the story of this unique state park \u2014 boasting America\u2019s northernmost cypress trees, a blackwater river darkened by fallen cypress needles and a Maryland Champion loblolly pine tree standing 113 feet tall \u2014 with events planned throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamilies have been making memories at this park since it opened in 1967,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Park Service<\/a>\u00a0Superintendent Nita Settina said. <!--more-->\u201cFrom boating and fishing on the beautiful and protected waters of the Pocomoke River to peaceful camping under a towering forest or observing wildlife such as bald eagles and river otters, Pocomoke River State Park is truly an exceptional natural area on the Lower Eastern Shore worthy of celebrating year-round.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An all-day celebration with on-site events are scheduled to mark the park\u2019s five decades. In recognition of National Public Lands Day \u2014 also observed Sept. 30 \u2014 a &#8220;Team Up to Clean Up&#8221; volunteer park beautification project will be ongoing from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event also coincides with the second annual Delmarva Paddling Weekend; participants and their equipment will launch from the park&#8217;s Shad Landing Marina at 9 a.m., paddling down Nassawango Creek and Pocomoke River.<\/p>\n<p>An open house at the Shad Landing Area gets underway at 1 p.m., featuring a complimentary barbecue and music. Official presentations begin at 2 p.m. with remarks from various state and local dignitaries and officials as well as the Maryland Park Service&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/snt.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scales and Tales<\/a>\u00a0program.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple displays will also be in place inside and out from 1 to 4 p.m., including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/nrp\/Pages\/BoatingSafety\/Water-Wise.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on boating safety<\/a>\u00a0featuring <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/nrp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Natural Resource Police<\/a> mascot Splash;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/centennial\/Pages\/Centennial-Notes\/CCC_History_Part_II.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Civilian Conservation Corps;<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/fire\/firewise.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Firewise Maryland<\/a>\u00a0wildfire prevention program featuring Smokey Bear; Fishing for Fun led by the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fishing and Boating Service<\/a>, a Trail of Change\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/activities.aspx?activity=HikingWalking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guided hike<\/a>\u00a0led by park naturalists; Native American crafts by the Pocomoke Indian Nation; along with arts and crafts and other offerings.
