{"id":17163,"date":"2017-09-20T10:26:54","date_gmt":"2017-09-20T14:26:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=17163"},"modified":"2017-10-05T13:36:33","modified_gmt":"2017-10-05T17:36:33","slug":"new-grant-program-funds-nature-based-solutions-to-protect-coastal-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/09\/20\/new-grant-program-funds-nature-based-solutions-to-protect-coastal-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"New Grant Program Funds Nature-Based Solutions to Protect Coastal Communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Four Demonstration Projects Proposed<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/731\/22039782539_88f9479c66.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Sunset after a storm over the Chesapeake Bay, taken by Krystle Chick\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: &#8220;Sunset After the Storm&#8221; by Krystle Chick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Board of Public Works today approved funding for a new\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/ccs\/Pages\/funding.aspx\">Coastal Resiliency Grant Program<\/a>\u00a0to help Maryland\u2019s coastal communities enhance their resiliency to the effects of extreme storms and weather.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> program will help design four shoreline improvement demonstration projects across the state with an additional two projects pending.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaryland is one of the most vulnerable states to the effects of a changing climate and sea level rise,\u201d Maryland Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. \u201cThis innovative new program \u2013 the first of its kind \u2013 will use natural and nature-based solutions to help protect coastal communities, infrastructure and public resources from climate-related impacts, such as erosion, flooding, storm surge and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grantees will work with department staff and coastal engineers to complete designs and will partner with local communities to ensure an open and transparent process. Funds for this new pilot program were designated in <a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/01\/24\/governor-larry-hogan-reaffirms-commitment-to-natural-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Governor Larry Hogan\u2019s budget<\/a> for Fiscal Year 2018, which set aside dedicated funds for the design of shoreline restoration projects in the following locations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dorchester County<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Address sea level rise, complex sediment dynamics and wave action through a living shoreline built with local dredged material along the mouth of Hurst Creek on the Choptank River.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eagle Harbor<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Focus on sea level rise, stormwater impacts and storm surge\u00a0in Prince George\u2019s County community through a living shoreline, stream enhancement and stormwater practices.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Somerset County<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Mitigate erosion and flooding along Deal Island Peninsula with a living shoreline that incorporates dune restoration and marsh enhancement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>St. Catherine\u2019s Island<\/strong> \u2013 Concentrate on erosion and sea level rise at the Jefferson Islands Club&#8217;s island in St. Mary\u2019s County with an innovative living shoreline that builds coastal resiliency and wildlife habitat on an island environment in the lower Potomac River.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Two additional projects, slated for Anne Arundel County, will go before the Board of Public Works later this year.<\/p>\n<p>The new Coastal Resiliency Grant Program\u00a0is part of a larger Resiliency through Restoration Initiative, which also provides technical assistance for communications, education, monitoring and outreach to document and share the benefits of natural solutions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four Demonstration Projects Proposed The Board of Public Works today approved funding for a new\u00a0Coastal Resiliency Grant Program\u00a0to help Maryland\u2019s coastal communities enhance their resiliency to the effects of extreme storms and weather.
