{"id":16703,"date":"2017-08-29T14:00:37","date_gmt":"2017-08-29T18:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=16703"},"modified":"2017-09-11T05:22:14","modified_gmt":"2017-09-11T09:22:14","slug":"deal-island-angler-catches-record-sheepshead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/08\/29\/deal-island-angler-catches-record-sheepshead\/","title":{"rendered":"Deal Island Angler Catches Record Sheepshead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Dave Alveberg Reels in 13.73-pound Fish<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-16722\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/08\/record.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of: man holding large fish\" width=\"350\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/08\/record.jpg 350w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/08\/record-300x236.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>The <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> has confirmed a Deal Island resident has set a new state fishing record in the Chesapeake Division for sheepshead.<\/p>\n<p>Dave Alveberg caught the 13.73-pound record breaking fish Aug. 17, in roughly 4 feet of water off South Marsh Island near Tangier Sound.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Intent on catching white perch and rockfish, Alveberg was using soft crab as bait when his line went &#8220;haywire.&#8221; After a brief struggle he pulled aboard the record sheepshead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing something like this on my boat was amazing,&#8221; Alveberg said.\u00a0He plans on getting his sheepshead mounted for display.<\/p>\n<p>The sheepshead&#8217;s weight was confirmed by Brent Malone of How Sweet It Is, a market in Somerset County. The catch broke the previous record 13.3-pound fish caught by Dan Thomas in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The department maintains <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/state-records.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state records for sport fish<\/a> in four divisions\u2013Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal and Invasive\u2013and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately-owned, fee-fishing waters are ineligible for consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Documents\/srapplication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state record application<\/a> and call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325.
