Reports out of Western Maryland confirm the first signs of the season as the region\u2019s early reds, yellows and oranges are starting to pop, particularly visible in Garrett County\u2019s higher elevations above 2,500 feet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/deepcreek.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deep Creek Lake State Park<\/a> is reporting that foliage is coming along with red maples starting to turn bright orange. The low areas, which are cooler and moister, have the most color.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The early season has been unusually warm and dry to date in both Garrett and Allegany counties, with about 75 percent of foliage still green. The weekend&#8217;s weather forecast follows that pattern, with sunny skies and highs reaching the 70s. Should be perfect conditions for camping, exploring, hiking, recreating or just relaxing.<\/p>\n<p>The weekend\u2019s warm temperatures should also make for a nice hike at <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/herrington.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Herrington Manor<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/swallowfalls.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swallow Falls<\/a> state parks, and birders should rejoice with bald eagles sightings at <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/rockygap.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rocky Gap State Park<\/a>. See farm animals, displays of all kinds and enjoy delicious Southern Maryland cooking. The fair runs Wednesday through Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday evening enjoy watching the initial flight of <a href=\"https:\/\/go.activecalendar.com\/doit-md\/event\/monarch-release-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freshly emerged monarch butterflies<\/a> during a release event at <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/central\/gunpowder.aspx\">Gunpowder Falls State Park<\/a>. Visitors will be able to hold butterflies before they fly away. You can also enjoy a <a href=\"https:\/\/go.activecalendar.com\/doit-md\/event\/guided-hike-in-hereford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guided morning hike<\/a> Saturday through Hereford past Raven Rock Falls.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/pages\/publiclandsday.aspx\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/PublishingImages\/npld_logo_no-line_cmyk_coated.PNG\" alt=\"Photo of National Public Lands Day logo\" width=\"500\" height=\"128\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/pages\/publiclandsday.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Public Lands Day<\/a> is Saturday and the department could really use your help!\u00a0Bring your family, friends or students to spend the day outdoors giving back to your community by pulling invasive species, maintaining trails, picking up trash and more. Marylanders are invited to volunteer for a National Public Lands Day-inspired park beautification and cleanup project starting at 9 a.m.\u00a0An open house and party will get underway at 1 p.m., featuring animals, displays and exhibits, free food, music and much, much more.<\/p>\n<p>Staying on the Eastern Shore, enjoy a day of family fun on the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/eastern\/tuckahoe.aspx\">Tuckahoe State Park<\/a> Challenge Course, which features a giant swing, pamper pole, rock wall, tube net and zip line. <a href=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/accounts\/MDDNR\/bulletins\/1b5544f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Registration<\/a> is recommended.<\/p>\n<p>In Central Maryland, the 18th century <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/central\/susquehannahistory.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rock Run Gristmill <\/a>in <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/central\/susquehanna.aspx\">Susquehanna State Park<\/a> is open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for self-guided or interpreter-led tours.<\/p>\n<p>You can also celebrate the &#8220;Great Pumpkin&#8221; this weekend near Germantown. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitmaryland.org\/event\/butlers-orchard-pumpkin-festival\">37th Annual Butler\u2019s Orchard Pumpkin Festival<\/a> in Montgomery County will be held on weekends throughout October. Hay and pony rides, hayloft jumping, food, crafts, animals, entertainment, the corn maze, pedal tractors and spider webs will all be part of the fun.<\/p>\n<p>In Carroll County, <a href=\"http:\/\/carrollcountytourism.org\/event\/piney-run-parks-apple-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Piney Run Park\u2019s Apple Festival<\/a> runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Meet local artisans and crafters while learning about the &#8220;Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also Saturday, <a href=\"http:\/\/pointofrocks.org\/art\/\">Art at the Point <\/a>takes place at Point of Rocks. This entertaining arts festival is located on grassland next to the Chesapeake &amp; Ohio Canal National Historical Park along the Potomac River. Artists, exhibitors and musicians will be on hand. Free admission and parking.<\/p>\n<p>In Washington County, <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/fortfrederick.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fort Frederick State Park<\/a>\u00a0will hold its annual Civil War event, designed to take visitors back 150 years. Re-enactors will return the fort to much the way it looked and operated in the 19th century for a weekend of living history. During the Civil War, Union troops were often stationed near the 260-year-old stone fort to guard the Chesapeake &amp; Ohio Canal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/09\/18\/sang-run-state-park-dedicated-at-annual-fall-fest\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-17506\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/09\/092117_SangRunSP.png\" alt=\"Photo of the Friends Store in McHenry\" width=\"300\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/09\/092117_SangRunSP.png 375w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/09\/092117_SangRunSP-300x246.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Western Maryland,\u00a0the property formerly known as Friends Delight will be officially opened and renamed <a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/09\/18\/sang-run-state-park-dedicated-at-annual-fall-fest\/\">Sang Run State Park<\/a>. The celebration in Garrett County Saturday will coincide with the ninth annual Fall Fest and Open House from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The new park sign will be unveiled at 1 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Another place to enjoy the changing fall foliage is at the sub-arctic swamp near <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/publiclands\/western_garrettforest.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Garrett State Forest<\/a>, locally referred to as the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/NaturalAreas\/Western\/Cranesville-Swamp.aspx\">Cranesville Swamp<\/a>, that is along the road to <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/swallowfalls.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swallow Falls State Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re planning a Maryland get-away this weekend, keep in mind that cabins are still available for the fall season.
