{"id":16565,"date":"2017-08-30T08:00:54","date_gmt":"2017-08-30T12:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=16565"},"modified":"2017-08-29T17:08:17","modified_gmt":"2017-08-29T21:08:17","slug":"fort-frederick-hosts-get-into-nature-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/08\/30\/fort-frederick-hosts-get-into-nature-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Fort Frederick Hosts Get Into Nature Weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Annual Event Provides Outdoor Fun for All Ages\u00a0Sept. 1-4<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/9\/8679\/27607720344_cc41a35b50.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of woodlands at Fort Frederick State Park\" width=\"350\" height=\"262\" \/>Visitors can explore the wild side of <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/western\/fortfrederick.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fort Frederick State Park<\/a> during the annual &#8220;Get Into Nature Weekend,&#8221; featuring staff-led nature activities for all interest levels and ages throughout the Labor Day weekend.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u201cIt is important that people spend time in the great outdoors to discover the natural world around them,\u201d Fort Frederick State Park Naturalist Charlie Sullivan said. \u201cThe weekend&#8217;s programs will give visitors a chance to experience a number of different habitats in the park as well as learn ways to become better stewards of our environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Events run 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Monday. All activities start at the Nature Center, located next to Captain Wort\u2019s Sutler Shop. Scheduled events include:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Sept. 1<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Field and Forest Walk, 10 a.m. to noon<br \/>\n\u2022 Wildflowers and Insect Pollinators, 1 p.m.<br \/>\n\u2022 Herb Gardening Activity, 2 p.m.<br \/>\n\u2022 The Water Cycle, 3 p.m.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Sept. 2<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Potomac River Walk, 10 a.m. to noon<br \/>\n\u2022 Insect Choices, 1 p.m.<br \/>\n\u2022 Insect Decomposer Scavenger Hunt, 2 p.m.<br \/>\n\u2022 Bug Bingo, 3 p.m.<br \/>\n\u2022 Gardening for Monarch Butterflies, 4 p.m.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Sept. 3<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Chesapeake &amp; Ohio Canal Towpath Walk, 10 a.m. to noon<br \/>\n\u2022 Owl Food Chain Activity for Children, 1 p.m.<br \/>\n\u2022 Owl Pellet Dissection, 2 p.m.<br \/>\n\u2022 Bird Bingo, 3 p.m.<br \/>\n\u2022 Nature Center Tour, 4 p.m.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Sept. 4<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Plantation Trail Walk, 10 a.m. to noon<br \/>\n\u2022 Mammals of Fort Frederick State Park, 1 p.m.<br \/>\n\u2022 Hiking the Appalachian Trail, 2 p.m.<br \/>\n\u2022 Milkweed Ecology, 3 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Additional parking is available at the Visitor Center. Food, gift, and souvenir items are available at Captain Wort&#8217;s Sutler Shop.<\/p>\n<p>There is a service charge of $3 per car for residents and $5 for non-residents.
