{"id":16107,"date":"2017-07-20T09:00:47","date_gmt":"2017-07-20T13:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=16107"},"modified":"2017-07-27T15:20:45","modified_gmt":"2017-07-27T19:20:45","slug":"marylands-new-off-road-vehicle-trail-opens-in-garrett-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/07\/20\/marylands-new-off-road-vehicle-trail-opens-in-garrett-county\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryland&#8217;s New Off-Road Vehicle Trail Opens in Garrett County"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Reservations Now Being Accepted for the St. John\u2019s Rock ORV Trail and Campground<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/07\/unnamed-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16195 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/07\/unnamed-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"349\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/07\/unnamed-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/07\/unnamed-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/07\/unnamed-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 349px) 100vw, 349px\" \/><\/a>Off-road vehicle enthusiasts can get ready to take on a new trail as the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> opens <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/ORV\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. John&#8217;s Rock ORV Trail and Campground<\/a> in Garrett County.<\/p>\n<p>Riders can now make advanced reservations for day use and overnight camping through the department\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/compass.dnr.maryland.gov\/dnrcompassportal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online licensing and registration system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The St. John\u2019s Rock ORV Trail, located within <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/forests\/Pages\/publiclands\/western_savageriverforest.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Savage River State Forest,<\/a>\u00a0includes more than 12 miles of woodland trails professionally conceptualized and constructed specifically for recreational enjoyment and use. ORV enthusiasts and riders provided contractors and engineers feedback and input on the trail throughout the process.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u201cThis off-road vehicle trail is the latest example of our ongoing mission to expand recreational access, opportunities and options within our beautiful public lands,\u201d Maryland Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. \u201cDevelopment of this unique ORV trail &#8211; the first of its kind in Maryland &#8211; has been the work of a great partnership among staff, our partner agencies and, of course, the stakeholders, who helped us produce this world-class trail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unique features of the new trail include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A campsite specifically designed to support ORV riders, with large parking areas;<\/li>\n<li>A family-friendly area with children&#8217;s trail loops within the campground area;<\/li>\n<li>Single-track hare-scramble style trail sections for motorcycles;<\/li>\n<li>Technical trail spur loops for all-terrain vehicles; and,<\/li>\n<li>A full-size rock crawl area for four-wheel drive vehicles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Importantly, the trail is located on state forest lands certified as sustainable based on stringent environmental, economic and social criteria. The department worked closely with professionals to ensure the trail was designed and constructed for public recreation in accordance with the department&#8217;s dual forest certification standards.
