No anoxic zones (areas with less than 0.2 mg\/l oxygen) were detected.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15577\" style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/earlyJune_volumes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15577\" class=\" wp-image-15577\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/earlyJune_volumes-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/earlyJune_volumes-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/earlyJune_volumes-768x525.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/earlyJune_volumes-1024x700.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/06\/earlyJune_volumes.jpg 1138w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15577\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maryland early June hypoxia volumes since 1985.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the beginning of June, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Geological Survey, University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science and University of Michigan scientists <a href=\"http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/media-release\/noaa-usgs-and-partners-predict-larger-summer-dead-zone-for-chesapeake-bay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">predicted<\/a>\u00a0a slightly larger than average hypoxic volume for the bay due to\u00a0higher\u00a0spring flows (January-May) and nitrogen loading from the Susquehanna\u00a0River.<\/p>\n<p>Crabs, fish, oysters and other aquatic creatures require oxygen to survive. Scientists and natural resource managers study the volume and duration of bay hypoxia to determine possible impacts to bay life.<\/p>\n<p>Each year (June-September), the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> computes these volumes from data collected by\u00a0Maryland\u00a0and\u00a0Virginia\u00a0monitoring teams. Data collection is funded by these states and the Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s\u00a0Chesapeake Bay\u00a0Program.
