The fish was recognized as a game\u00a0fish a few years ago, but until now nobody had broken the seven-pound minimum weight\u00a0to be eligible for state records.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob Vosburgh, 20, of Lexington Park,\u00a0caught the fish recorded at 8.27 pounds June 1 in the lower\u00a0Potomac River. The white catfish was\u00a023 inches in length.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Using bloodworms as bait and a Carolina sinking rig\u2013designed for finding fish on the river bottom\u2013Vosburgh caught several small fish that morning but decided to be a little more patient and see what else was biting. Vosburgh, who was fishing with a friend, would see his patience pay off\u00a0when he made his record catch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven before we took it out of the water, just judging by the size of its head we knew it was state record,\u201d said Vosburgh.<\/p>\n<p>Veronica Beck of Crabknockers, a seafood market\u00a0in Leonardtown, certified the fish\u2019s weight.<\/p>\n<p>The department maintains <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Fisheries\/Pages\/state-records.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">state records for sport fish<\/a> in four divisions\u2013Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal and Invasive\u2013and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately-owned, fee-fishing waters are not eligible for record consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Documents\/srapplication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">state record application<\/a> and call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325.
