The Secretaries of Maryland\u2019s Departments of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Environment and <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Natural Resources<\/a> encourage all Marylanders to take note of swimming safety tips to ensure a safe and healthy swimming experience \u2013 no matter where they swim.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u201cWith Memorial Day approaching, many Marylanders are gearing up for pools to open and for trips to the beach,\u201d said Health and Mental Hygiene Secretary Dennis R. Schrader. \u201cWe\u2019re reminding residents to include safety in all their water activities this season \u2013 be it the pool, beach, river or elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Environment Secretary Ben Grumbles listed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marylandhealthybeaches.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Healthy Beaches<\/a> website and smartphone app as examples. \u201cFrom Memorial Day to Labor Day, the Maryland Healthy Beaches website and app deliver updated information on conditions at the nearly 200 monitored beaches in Maryland, and it provides the dos and don&#8217;ts for swimmers to stay healthy and waters to keep clean,\u201d said Secretary Grumbles. The app is available for download via the App Store and Google Play.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said his department is firmly committed to <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/nrp\/Pages\/default.aspx\">protecting Maryland\u2019s parks, waterways and people<\/a> as residents enjoy activities throughout the state. \u201cMaryland offers access to some of the nation\u2019s best water recreation opportunities; it\u2019s imperative for everyone to help reduce the potential for danger by observing all water safety rules,\u201d Secretary Belton said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Swimming is one of Maryland\u2019s most popular sporting and leisure activities. This year\u2019s campaign will increase awareness of the simple things people can do to prevent the most common and serious health and safety risks associated with recreational water activities \u2013 drownings and injuries, sunburns and potential infections:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Never swim alone;<\/li>\n<li>Be vigilant about small children\u2019s activities and whereabouts;<\/li>\n<li>Use swim vests on all children at the beach, and for weaker swimmers in pools;<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t swallow pool or beach water;<\/li>\n<li>Change children\u2019s diapers often, to minimize the risk of contaminating water;<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t swim when you have diarrhea;<\/li>\n<li>Follow the package directions when using pool chemicals;<\/li>\n<li>Stay out of the water if it has a strange color;<\/li>\n<li>Reapply sunscreen frequently through the day;<\/li>\n<li>Drink plenty of fluids;<\/li>\n<li>Use bug\/mosquito spray as needed \u2013 especially as Maryland <a href=\"https:\/\/phpa.health.maryland.gov\/pages\/zika.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">takes steps to guard against the Zika virus<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Learn how to avoid and to escape rip currents and;<\/li>\n<li>Save contact information for emergency personnel in your cell phone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is easy to stay safe and healthy while enjoying the water.
