{"id":15052,"date":"2017-05-15T08:58:43","date_gmt":"2017-05-15T12:58:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=15052"},"modified":"2017-05-19T11:10:26","modified_gmt":"2017-05-19T15:10:26","slug":"park-service-recruiting-next-generation-of-environmental-stewards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/05\/15\/park-service-recruiting-next-generation-of-environmental-stewards\/","title":{"rendered":"Park Service Recruiting Next Generation of Environmental Stewards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>The Maryland Conservation Corps Wants You!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/6\/5545\/11801769806_3d77b53ee8_n.jpg\" width=\"352\" height=\"264\" \/>The <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> is now recruiting 35 full-time individuals, between the ages of 17 to 25, for the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/mcc.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Conservation Corps<\/a>, an award-winning AmeriCorps program that engages young adults\u00a0in extensive conservation and natural resource management projects that enhance Maryland&#8217;s public lands and waterways.<\/p>\n<p>The program is seeking recruits to participate in the 11-month effort, beginning in September 2017 and ending in early August 2018. <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/mcc_application.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apply today<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/03\/20\/dedicated-to-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Conservation Corps<\/a> crew members gain valuable hands-on training and experience as they help restore the Chesapeake Bay; protect forests by caring for and planting native trees; preserve wildlife habitats; maintain park trails, picnic areas, campsites and playgrounds; and partake in environmental education and interpretive programming.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Maryland Conservation Corps connects interested young adults with our state\u2019s treasured natural resources,\u201d Secretary Mark Belton said. \u201cThrough service to our citizens and our environment, crew members become knowledgeable stewards while gaining valuable career, life and social skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Managed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Publiclands\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Park Service<\/a>, the Maryland Conservation Corps provides the opportunity for skill development and personal growth through a supportive, team-based environment, emphasizing the satisfaction of completing projects that benefit Maryland\u2019s natural resources. Under the supervision of staff, individuals work in crews of 5-7 members dispersed throughout the state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our park rangers and staff rely on crew members to bring projects to completion each and every year,\u201d Maryland Park Service Superintendent Nita Settina said. \u201cMarylanders selected to participate in this highly-competitive program take great satisfaction in knowing they are making a positive and tangible contribution to their communities and state. Every year, we have participants from around the state as well as from across the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To be considered, individuals must submit an <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/publiclands\/Pages\/mcc_application.aspx\">online application<\/a> along with a writing sample, which will be reviewed by department staff. Placement will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis.<\/p>\n<p>The program receives funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service, <a href=\"http:\/\/gosv.maryland.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Governor&#8217;s Office on Service and Volunteerism<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Maryland Conservation Corps Wants You!
