Tessa Cosens Hauls in 32.5-Pound Fish<\/em><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>\u00a0confirmed a Washington County woman has set a new muskellunge<\/a> (muskie) nontidal state fishing record.<\/p>\n

Tessa Cosens, 26, caught a muskie recorded at 32.5 pounds May 6 along the banks of the upper Potomac River in Washington County.<\/p>\n

The record fish was 49 inches long with a 24-inch girth.<\/p>\n

A relative newcomer to muskie fishing, Cosens – who is several months pregnant and had been feeling under the weather – was\u00a0fishing along the riverbank using a 7-foot muskie rod and double-spinner. She snagged her record catch after a 15-minute struggle.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the guys around me stopped fishing and looked at me,\u201d Cosens said. \u201cThere is no other fish that fights like a muskie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Muskie’s are one of the largest freshwater fish in the state. Cosens’ catch broke the\u00a0previous Maryland record of 31.75 pounds, set\u00a0by Kenneth Files\u00a0in 2011.<\/p>\n

To help determine the age of the fish, Cosens is donating\u00a0a sample of the muskie\u2019s scales and cleithrum – a large bone above the gills – to the department for further analysis.<\/p>\n

The department maintains\u00a0state records for sport fish<\/a>\u00a0in four divisions \u2013 Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal and Invasive \u2013 and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately-owned, fee-fishing waters are not eligible for record consideration.<\/p>\n

Anglers reporting a potential record catch should call 443-569-1381 or 410-260-8325. The fish should be immersed in ice water to preserve its weight until it can be checked, confirmed and certified by the department.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
