{"id":14977,"date":"2017-05-08T12:00:57","date_gmt":"2017-05-08T16:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=14977"},"modified":"2017-05-05T13:00:03","modified_gmt":"2017-05-05T17:00:03","slug":"anglers-gearing-up-to-catch-invasive-species","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/05\/08\/anglers-gearing-up-to-catch-invasive-species\/","title":{"rendered":"Anglers Gearing Up to Catch Invasive Species"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Stop the Snakehead Fishing Derby Scheduled for June 3<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/8\/7237\/7006401300_7088f40a92_n.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"196\" \/>The <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> is hosting the second Annual \u201cStop the Snakehead Fishing Derby\u201d June 3 at the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Lock+22,+Potomac,+MD+20854\/@39.0537197,-77.2910605,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x89b6315f226f47d5:0x8eead05df55f8ed6!8m2!3d39.0537197!4d-77.2888718\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pennyfield Lock<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Interested anglers can register for the free event\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/snakehead-derby.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since the 2002 discovery of snakeheads in Maryland, efforts have been made eradicate the invasive fish before it can alter the balance of our state\u2019s aquatic ecosystem. The fish have spread beyond the Potomac River and are now prevelant in many tidal rivers in the Chesapeake Bay. In 2015, the species was found reproducing in the C&amp;O Canal.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSnakeheads are a top predator that have rapidly expanded their range in the watershed over the past 10 years. They have become very abundant in some Maryland streams and rivers,\u201d Maryland Natural Resources Resources Planner Joseph Love said. \u00a0&#8220;While we are still studying their adverse impact, we are encouraging anglers to fish and harvest them to minimize their impact on our environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s derby is being hosted by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources in collaboration with the National Park Service, as well as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bass Pro Shops and the office of Maryland State Senator Susan C.
