{"id":13273,"date":"2017-02-24T11:37:50","date_gmt":"2017-02-24T16:37:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=13273"},"modified":"2017-04-14T13:56:00","modified_gmt":"2017-04-14T17:56:00","slug":"six-deer-test-positive-for-chronic-wasting-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/02\/24\/six-deer-test-positive-for-chronic-wasting-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Six Deer Test Positive for Chronic Wasting Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Cases Localized to Existing Management Area in Western Maryland<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/9\/8362\/29462390793_09b1c44286_n.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"231\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif;color: #333333\">The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>\u00a0recently received laboratory confirmation that six white-tailed deer sampled in Allegany County tested positive for<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/hunt_trap\/CWD_in_Maryland.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">chronic wasting disease<\/a>. All of the cases were found within the existing<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/hunt_trap\/CWD_in_Maryland.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Chronic Wasting Disease Management Area<\/a>.<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: start\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif;color: #333333\">Five of the positive deer collected in 2016 were harvested by hunters in Allegany County during the statewide deer season and one was a road-killed deer collected near Cumberland during routine chronic wasting disease sampling efforts. The latest findings bring the number of positive cases in the state to 17 since 2011.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: start\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif;color: #333333\">\u201cChronic wasting disease currently affects a very small percentage of deer in western Maryland,\u201d Wildlife and Heritage Service Director Paul Peditto said. \u201cOur staff will continue to work diligently to document and monitor the presence of this disorder.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: start\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif;color: #333333\">Concerns over the disease should not stop anyone from hunting deer or enjoying venison. There is no evidence that the disease can be transmitted to humans, livestock or other animals. It is recommended that hunters avoid consuming the meat of sick animals, as well as the brain, spinal column or lymph nodes of any deer \u2014 all of which are normally removed during the butchering process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: start\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif;color: #333333\">The Maryland cases appear to be from an outbreak that was found in West Virginia in 2005.\u00a0 Since then, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania have all had documented\u00a0cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif;color: #333333\">The department<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>has intensively sampled for the disease since 2002 and more than 8,800 deer have been tested. The first confirmed case in the state was reported in February 2011.
