The proposal was based on deliberations at past commission meetings and includes stakeholder comments and recommendations from the commercial seafood industry, conservationists, environmentalists and watermen.<\/p>\n<p>The draft comes after the <a href=\"dnr.maryland.gov\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a> reconstituted the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2016\/07\/12\/department-hosts-first-oyster-advisory-commission-meeting\/\">commission<\/a>\u00a0and completed work on a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/fisheries\/Pages\/oysters\/5-Year-Oyster-Review-Report.aspx\">five-year oyster assessment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing the release of the five-year report, we thought it important for the advisory panel to re-examine the state\u2019s oyster management plan with the ultimate goal being: \u2018More oysters in the Chesapeake Bay,\u2019\u201d said Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton. \u201cThe draft proposal, which includes recommendations from riverkeepers and watermen, seeks to aid the commission\u2019s ongoing deliberations and discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/dnrweb.dnr.state.md.us\/fisheries\/calendar\/events\/1259\/OAC_Presentation_Consolidated_Proposal.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">draft proposal<\/a> includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Establishment of rotational harvest areas<\/li>\n<li>Creation of new oyster sanctuaries<\/li>\n<li>Expansion of oyster sanctuaries and public fishery areas<\/li>\n<li>Recommendation for state restoration funding for sanctuaries<\/li>\n<li>Information on the selection of the fourth and fifth tributaries for large-scale restoration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe proposal now before the commission focuses on oysters&#8217; ecological and economic value,&#8221; Belton said. \u201cThe comprehensive proposal was compiled for and by the commission.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Oyster Advisory Commission will now review the compiled proposal as it discusses oyster management policies and practices. The commission is legislatively charged with advising the department on oyster management decisions.
