{"id":12880,"date":"2017-01-25T09:41:57","date_gmt":"2017-01-25T14:41:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/?p=12880"},"modified":"2017-04-14T14:56:56","modified_gmt":"2017-04-14T18:56:56","slug":"record-winter-turkey-season-reported","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2017\/01\/25\/record-winter-turkey-season-reported\/","title":{"rendered":"Record Winter Turkey Season Reported"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/01\/23918527764_2ddcc835de_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12885 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/01\/23918527764_2ddcc835de_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a>Hunters reported taking 109 wild turkeys during Maryland\u2019s third annual winter\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/hunt_trap\/WildTurkeyHunting.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">turkey hunting season<\/a>, which was open statewide Jan. 19-21.<\/p>\n<p>The harvest was significantly higher than the 61 birds taken last winter, which was hampered by severe weather, and slightly higher\u00a0than the inaugural 2015 season.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are glad to see hunters taking advantage of this new opportunity,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Wildlife and Heritage Service<\/a> Director Paul Peditto. \u201cOur goal is to give more hunters the chance to benefit from the great wildlife management success story that lead to the restoration of this remarkable species.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The winter turkey season was established in 2015 to provide hunters an additional hunting opportunity while minimizing conflicts with other seasons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/2015\/12\/21\/talkin-turkey\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-12898\" src=\"http:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/dnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/01\/Turkey-Link-300x246.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/wildlife\/Documents\/WildTurkey_Annual_Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Turkey populations<\/a>\u00a0were minimal in the state\u00a0until an extensive\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.maryland.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maryland Department of Natural Resources<\/a>\u00a0program, which trapped and relocated wild flocks of turkeys and succeeded in establishing populations in every county.<\/p>\n<p>Turkeys were harvested in 22 counties this winter, with Dorchester, Washington, and Charles counties reporting the highest figures. Adult males comprised about 49 percent of the harvest with the rest a combination of\u00a0female and juvenile birds. Ninety percent were taken with a shotgun with others harvested with a crossbow or vertical bow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"width: 398px;height:
